Any drive will work with your machine. Hitachi, Western Digital, and Seagate are all very good drives. With the memory, match the make of the additional memeory to the memory currently in the machine. Sometimes two different manufacturer's memory chips will conflict with each other.

I have a Dell XPS M170 and I when I had the operating system upgraded from XP to Windows 7 my DVD starting making a clicking noise. I can see the DVD drive listed on my computer but I can not get any

It's a commom problem when you update OS's and jump 2 OS's.I have never experenced a noise from the DVD rom from a OS upgrade, but , If you had it upgraded I would take it back to the person that did the upgrade, apparently somthing was done wrong with both the machines. Have you done ALL the Windows Updates? Open Device Manager, DVD/CD rom drives, Open your DVD, Update driver.

Take out your ram sticks and put them back in. Also disconnect your hard drive and reconnect it. Then restart. If this doesnt help you may have a blown power supply.

Apreciado endor74,
Tu disco duro externo podria estar averiado o tener la tabla de ficheros corrupta. Por favor descarga la siguiente aplicacion de Seagate para verificar si es por motivos de hardware:
http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?locale=en-US&name=SeaTools&vgnextoid=720bd20cacdec010VgnVCM100000dd04090aRCRD
Si no te indica ningun problema de hardware, te recomiendo que utilices la siguiente aplicacion de OnTrack para intentar recuperar los datos todavia accesibles:
http://www.ontrackdatarecovery.co.uk/data-recovery-software/easyrecovery-lite/
Si no aparece ningun dato como accesible y recuperable, entonces solo queda la opcion de formatear el disco de nuevo. Te recomiendo esta guia que puedes seguir paso a paso para formatear el disco:

Wish to install new hard drive in my Dell Dimension 9150

The BIOS can sometimes be a limiting factor when upgrading to a larger drive so I would check if you have a flash BIOS that can be upgraded to accommodate more memory or larger drives. The utility used for upgrading would have to come from Dell's website.
To characterize your system in detail, I recommend using Belarc Advisor:
