the laptop detected the old drive with no problems; the old drive went down because it won't read CDs. If you are unable to give me a workable solution to make this new drive detect, do you know of an internal dvd-rw drive that will work with this model?

the link to the parts warehouse was helpful, but the link to the new toshiba DVD drive was not as it would not work with the laptop model in question.

As stated already, read the part number from the old drive and do a search on ebay for that. Purchase only from a power seller who has *at least* a 7 day DOA warranty. This means when you receive it, check it out right away and report any problems.

Also, you do need to enter the drive properties from Device Manager. Get there from Control Panel, System. and then check the box to "make this drive recordable".

Just because the old drive isn't working or seeming to work, if you can hear it spin up upon inserting a disc, the mechanical functions are okay and you would want to exhaust the software issues most of us are pointing you to here.

And, with the one you just bought, let the seller know right away its not working and find out if they sent you the wrong model for your particular Toshiba.

And, as to the best solution to your problem. naturally I'd like you to select me.

BUT, Ginko has given you everything you need and he knows what he is doing as well as a few others here.

Good Day, mate.

Is the new drive an external? If so it may need drivers in order for the machine to recognize it. Also, if you're looking for a DVD-RW internal, there are several on ebay for your machine at a decent price.

I was still wondering if the new drive was external? If so, get back to me with the make and model and I'll see if it requires drivers and where to download them from.

Right click on the CD/DVD drive (the one that won't read the media) and click on the properties and look at the option at recording tab. If its unchecked check as shown below

Even its checked uncheck-apply and recheck-apply

Please post if issue persists for further troubleshooting

You could try an external model if the internal model didn't work. If the internal one didn't work it could be something to do with the motherboard.

Upgrade CD/DVD ROM to CD-RW/DVD ROM

I just replaced my original CD/DVD ROM with a Toshiba SD-R2512 CD-RW/DVD ROM in my 1805-S253 running Windows ME. I used "Roxio Easy CD Creator" for writing to CD's. Everything was "plug'n'play" except the bezel that came with the new drive had to be swapped out. Windows ME recognized the new drive immediately and I didn't have to load any new drivers. This upgrade will probably work on other 1800 or 1805 Satellite series machines.

I HAVE A IBM THINKPAD T 30

Thinkpad T30 are usually supplied with the following optical drives, CD ROM, CD R/W, and Combo DVD ROM with CD R/W.
You most likely have the Combo drive, therefore you can play DVD and CD disks plus burning music and data onto CD-R and CD+R discs.
You need CD burning software such as Roxio Easy CD Creator or Nero. Both these programs are excellent and easy to use.

DVD-RW IBM A31 Thinkpad problem

I take it you are trying to "send to" files to the DVD-RW?You can't burn a DVD just with windows XP . It only supports CDRW drives.

Get commercial software like Roxio or Nero, or download a free CD burning program like this one:

DVD

Hi,
I don't mean to disagree with my associate, but DVD players for R series (or T, A, etc) can be found for less than 20.00 US (Ebay is a good example)
For that matter, we've got at least a dozen at our shop which we sell for 25.00
Installation is very simple as well, just pop the old drive out, put the new drive in.
Good luck
