Projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both. Repair kits with instructions are also avail from www.TvRepairKits.com

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Rear Projection tv 51MP392H 51MP3964H screen went black

If you are seeing no light at all, it sounds like the bulb might have gone.
Rear proj TV's are basically like a Data Projector in a Box.
It should be possible to replace the bulb.
Most rear projection TV's have an access panel on them (at the back or on one side) that should allow you to get to the bulb.
It should look something like the one below.

TV just went out now there is a beeping sound. Unplugged nothing held the power button nothing any suggestions.

Fault to its main board. Short circuited component/s at it. Contact any service technician; or the authorized service center. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here. Surf the site with patience. Pull up older posts. http://electronicshelponline.blogspot.com/ . In most cases, the main board might have to be replaced. If so, a software [firmware] update too might be necessary.

Emachine laptop E527 won't switch on power button solid blue with black screen stone dead no sounds beeps nothing

Dear
In this case the RAM may have the problem. Pl. do detach the RAM from the mother board and clean the golden contact points with a dust free eraser and re-attach the same to the mother board. (found under the back cover).
If problem persists replace the RAM with new.

Thanks.

I have a 1999 toshiba rear proj.tv red power light goes on and off--will not power up when power button is pushed--please help-thanks

You need a new projector bulb. Google up your model and buy the best warranteed one you can find. Buy a "caged assembly" and not just a bare bulb.

Then unplug your tv and get a screwdriver. Follow your model's instructions and just snug down the electrical screws. Do not overtighten them.

Then consult your manual on how to reset the lamp timer so it knows you put a new bulb in and fires up from the first try.

Treat yourself because you've just saved yourself a trip from a repairman!!

Sony wega rear proj-i believe the bulbs burned out ,tv works in BW only

Because your TV is still projecting a B&W image doesn't mean the lamp is bad. This TV is having something else going on other than a lamp. Possibly a processing board issue if it's only projecting B&W.
This will need to go into a trusted service shop. I would call and see if you can get an estimate of repair first.

Sanyo DP26647 Black no sound I have pressed the reset button 2 times but nothing happens.

Hello tyarbrough,

This might be an indication of a power supply problem. Since the TV appears to be completly dead. This might be a problem with the power supply board or the boards that attach to the power supply board. I would suggest that you have a qualified TV technician check your TV since the procedure requires knowledge of electronics.

I hope this helps,

Thank you,
