Hello PMewis, Just a clarifitication question about your printer. You installed directly off the HP install cd. Is the message your getting related to when you try to scan from the deskjet itself, or is it when you try and use the hp software.
This will help in trying to determine where to figure out where the problem is, also what operating system are you using and what version. In the scanning software of the printer there is an option to select PDF as your default.
Please go into the scanning software feature located in the program menu.
You will have to reinstall the printer/scanner drivers (check on the internet for your type/model and download the drivers if you can't find the original install cd). Usually the HP website is your best bet for old or new driver sets. Source(s): http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/produ? Hope it works.
