Check the brush roll to be sure it's spinning free too much drag can cause that to get hotter but usually it would break the belt. That spindle will get hot from the friction created by turning the belt and from the motor's heat. They'll just get hot, any brand that spindle will be hot after running it. It's just how it is.
Something is preventing the brush roller from turning even though it seeems to be OK when not in contact with the floor. The motor shaft is spinning on one spot of the belt, causing the heating, the smell, and eventual belt failure. I have had brush rollers that appeared OK but proved to have pet hair jammed between the end caps and the roller itself causing rotation to be very difficult
I would first check to see if the beater brush is turning freely. You should be able to turn it by hand. If you can not, remove it from the vacuum and clean any debris on the brush and especially on the ends that hold it in place.
Some WD40 on the end pieces might help as well.
There is usually a belt diagram on the plastic case of the vacuum where the belt itself is found.

It's possible you have a broken belt, although Sebo belts usually last at least 10 years and often much longer. The first (and easiest) thing to do is remove the brush roll and check that it's not damaged where it mounts on the metal drive spindle. If that's OK, place the machine in a position where you can see the drive spindle then, keeping fingers and clothing well clear, switch on and check if the drive spindle rotates. If a belt is broken, the spindle will (of course) not rotate. The ultimate check is to take the cover off and have a look. To do that, first separate the bag compartment from the base, then turn the base upside down and undo the four deeply-recessed screws. Turn the base over, move the suction tubes out of vertical and just lift the cover off. The belts will be exposed and all will become clear (or possibly not!).

I have had problems with the belts on my Mach 5 overheating (smell of burning rubber) and also with the motor overheating and shutting down.
I learned the hard way that one of the issues might be that the roller/brush on the bottom of the unit has a metal bearing inside the roller/brush that can become clogged with hair (both human and pet hair) which effects performance of the unit. It’s fairly easy to fix.
Lay the vacuum on the floor so that you can see the roller/brush. Then remove the phillip head screws that hold the protective plastic plate over the roller/brush. (There are about 6 screws that hold this plastic protective plate in place) Also, you will be removing the (1) screw that also holds the plastic plate over the belts. There are (2) belts that you can remove and when in doubt replace these (2) belts for around $9.00.
Once you have the protective plastic plate off that covers the roller/brush disconnect the belt is around the roller. Take the roller and cut off any hair that is wrapped around the roller. Next, grab the roller by each end and twist the ends caps and (1) of the ends will unscrew. Once you have unscrewed one of the ends remove any hair or dust that is trapped under this cap. (Be careful not to lose the small metal washer that sit on top of the bearing)You will notice under this cap is a metal bearing that can become clogged and jammed with hair. The hair should come out fairly easy and allow the brush to spin fairly easy once you have screwed the end caps back in place test that it spins freely. If it doesn’t spin freely replace the roller/brush with a new one for about $23.00.
When you put the belts back on the thick rubber one (Belt # 40201-271) has probably become stretched and should be replaced for about $3.00. The small diameter belt that goes over the roller/brush probably does not usually need to be replaced and does not usually fit very tight. I have heard that people will take the small roller/brush belt and turn it upside down to get a better fit.
I just did this on my Mach 5 and it runs like a new machine. I did end up replacing the roller/brush head.

If this model has a brush control - i.e a roller at the side of the model which controls brush to spin or not, then its a protected brush model - therefore even if the drive belt is intact the Dyson would have to be repaired by a service personnel or professional. The brush protection isn't able to be taken apart and sounds like it may well have slipped off due to tension.
I have the same problem. I keep thinking I have fixed it, but then another belt breaks. I only have the issue when the roller is disengaged. (on bare floor setting). I did find that the unit was slipping back into engaged slowly, because the disengage mechanizim was not kathing prperly,. Tightened up a screw, and now appears to hold, but somehow the belt still get broken - I beleave it is an issue that the belt is not staying away from the drive when it is disengaged.
Stand vacuum up and with it plugged in. Rotate knob between carpet and bare floor and back 5 times leaving it on carpet when finished. Rotate vacuum back from upright position and lay vacuum on the floor, rotating it onto its side. Turn vacuum on.
