That depends on the type of HD you have...Mine is a Maxtor 3 1/2" ATA 60 gig...On Maxtor's web site you can print the jumper settings for the type and style of the the HD you have...A side note on Maxtor's ATA HD's, the jumper setting for 'Master' on all styles would be the last VERTICAL pin setting on the LEFT.
I'm sure if you have another type (Seagate,etc.) they will have setting's on their web-site.
Don't worry if you get it wrong you won't damage the HD, it just won't work.
Hope this helps!

    On style "B" and "C" style's of Maxtor's HD's there is a notch on the the bottom left (no pin on bottom, just one on the top) so in for these styles place the jumper on the NEXT jumper on the left (a two pin slot) right next to the notch.

How to set print driver to use card stock

The way to set defaults for all printers is to go into Control Panel, Click to get to the Printers area and set what you want there. It then becomes the norm for that printer. When you change any setting when using the printer, it does not remember those settings - only for the job in hand. Setting as mentioned ensures the printer will always use the settings - if you want to change for one job, do that when you want to print.

NEED JUMPER SETTINGS FOR MASTER HARD DRIVE

Set The Jumper Setting On Your Hard Disk Drive

The hard disk drive will be detected as 32 GB if the jumper is set to the 32 GB clip pin setting. The common jumper settings for Samsung hard disk drives are listed below. Please check the label on your hard disk drive for the correct jumper setting.

Important: Use the alternate jumper setting listed below under General Pin Setting. After changing the jumper, partition and format your hard disk drive.

Configuring your Hard Disk Drive (Master, Slave, or Cable Select) - Setting the Jumper

If this is the only HDD in your computer, set the pin setting to Master.
If this is the second HDD in your computer, set the pin setting to Slave.
If this is the second HDD in your computer, and the first drive is set to Cable Select, set the pin setting to Cable Select.
If you are replacing the HDD in your computer, set the jumper setting to match that of the drive you are replacing.

Cable Select:

This setting is the default setting for PATA/IDE hard disk drives. With the Cable Select jumper setting, the BIOS determines whether a hard disk drive is Set as Master or Set as Slave by it's position on the UDMA cable.
If the hard disk drive jumper is set to Cable Select and is connected to the black connector on the end of the UDMA cable, it is recognized as Set as Master for that PATA controller.
If the hard disk drive jumper is set to Cable Select and is connected to the grey connector on the middle of the UDMA cable, it is recognized as Set as Slave for that PATA controller.

Note: When using Cable Select, your system must meet the following conditions:
Your systems host controller must support Cable Select.
Your hard drives must support Cable Select.
Your cable must support Cable Select.

Set as Master:

Use this setting if you are installing an additional hard disk drive to a single UDMA cable with a hard disk drive Set as Slave, jumper one hard disk drive to Set as Master, and the other to Set as Slave.
Use this setting if you are installing an additional hard disk drive to a single UDMA cable and the Cable Select setting is not recognized.

Set as Slave:

Use this setting if you are installing an additional hard disk drive to a single UDMA cable with a hard disk drive Set as Master, jumper one hard disk drive to Set as Master, and the other to Set as Slave.
Use this setting if you are installing an additional hard disk drive to a single UDMA cable and the Cable Select setting is not recognized.

32 GB Clip Pin Setting:

Use this on computers manufactured before November 1998 when either you start up your computer and see the message, "Hard disk drive controller failure", or your system stops responding during the boot process after installing a new drive. This occurs when the hard disk drive is too large for the BIOS to support.

If after performing the troubleshooting procedure listed above, the full capacity of your hard disk drive is not recognized, click here for information about obtaining a system BIOS update. If you are unable to update your BIOS, another option would be to create a second partition with the remaining unallocated disk space.

I could not set the jumper ID as 3 in Seagate 73 GB model of Hard drive.It has 12 pins at the back of Hard drive.

You need a jumper on ID pin sets 1 and 2 (as if you were setting it for both ID 1 and ID 2)
These pin sets work like binary, so set 1 for ID1, set 2 for ID 2, and sets 1 & 2 for ID 3. In this mannar, with just the 4 sets of pins, you can have IDs from 0 to 15 (no jumpers to all 4 jumpered..1+2+4+8=15)

* * * *
* * * *
1234 set number
1248 binary ID (additive)

If you need further explanation, please post a reply here.

How the jumper setting is done for maxtor n256j50

If this is an IDE/PATA hard drive then the jumper settings are marked on the circuit board.
MA = master
SL = slave
CS = cable select
If this hard drive is the one installed on the Primary IDE controller the the jumper has to be set to Master. If it won't boot up then the jumper needs to be set to Cable select.

If this hard drive is a second hard drive and is connected to the 2nd connector on the IDE data cable that is connected to the primary IDE controller then the jumper must be set to Slave.

If this hard drive is a second hard drive and is connected to the secondary IDE controller and there is no other drive on the IDE data cable other than this hard disk the the jumper can be set to either Master or Slave.
If there is a CD drive on this cable too then the drives on this data cable then the jumpers on each drive must be set differently, they cannot be set the same jumper setting.

I have a maxtor quantum fireball plus as 20.5 hard drive. i want to set it to slave. how do i set the jumpers?

on maxtor drives, you will find the jumper within a cluster of 9 pins. if you look on the bottom of the drive, on the circuit board, the pins should be labeled "ms" "cs" and such. the "ms" and "cs" stand for "master" and "cable select". you rarely use the true "slave" setting anymore, more often than not' "slave" drives are set to "cable select" and are attached to the middle, slave position on the ide cable. in "cable select" mode, the cable decides what device is master and what is slave, depending upon the devices' position on the ide cable.

to set the drive to "slave", set the jumper so that it only has 1 pin under it, and doesnt actually jump any pins, or just take the jumper out. only use the "slave" setting if the "master" device on the same ide cable is actually set to "master".

if the master device is actually set to "cable select" then you will have to set the slave device also to "cable select" and the middle position on the ide cable will set it automatically to be a slave. , instead of using the jumper to make it the "slave".

to set the drive as "cable select", which is what i would recommend, use the jumper to connect the 2 pins which are labeled "cs", the 2nd position from the bottom position on most older maxtor drives, and attach this hard drive to the middle connector of the ide cable.

I want to add another hard drive and need to know how to set the jumpers on my maxtor 90645d3 please help.ty

if you want to boot from this drive, please set the jumper to the master position.

if this drive is for additional storage, please set the jumper to slave. and make sure 1st hard drive is set to master.

if this is the only drive in the system, please set the jumper to single or remove the jumper.

there will be a chart telling you which pins are for which setting in the jumper area, which is between the data plug and the power plug on the back of your HDD.

main thing that will cause drives to not work is 2 jumpers on the same cable and they both are set to the same thng.. i.e. master/master or slave/slave. also, if one is set to single drive it will likely bypass the slave drive.
