Question about Nikon Speedlight SB-800 TTL Flash

2 Answers

The flash shooting distance range does not appear at horizontal position.

My Speedlight SB-800 has been hard pressed due to a mistake. :-(
It had a crack in the front glass and minor damage at the Flash head tilting/rotating lock release button.
I have fixed both problems and the flash seems to function normaly, exept for one thing. The flash shooting distance range does not appear at horizontal position, but only at 60, 75 and 90 degrease, whitch is totaly wrong.
Because of the repair, I opened the flashhead, but could not find anything that could give that wrong position-signal.
Did anyone know, what could be wrong?

Thank you Junoon007, but I have tried that.

I also have tried to do what the expert Aviorix (I think) suggest me to do, to go deeper.

It's very difficult to get the plasticshells of, even when all screws are removed, but I forced it to open enough to remove the plasticdisc, who told the position of the head.

It has two very small metal pickups underneath, moving on a printboard. They were bend backward and when I bend them back to normal again, they broke.

I don't knew, if I can get this disc as a sparepart, but now I will assemble the parts and see that happens, when there is no pickups. If it shows the shootingdistance in all angels, I can live with that.

With new batteries in the flash, and it being off camera what happens when you press the test button. If still it does not flash call Nikon 1-800-645-6689

Will give correct expoures in ttl

Hard to tell what might be going on without knowing what camera you are using or what shooting mode the camera is in.

What I do is set my camera to Manual. Then set the shutter speed for 1/60th a second. Try a shot with the SB-800 attached - firing directly at a subject that is about 6 feet away and check your image.

To expand the range of the flash, you can change the ISO setting. Adjusting from ISO 200 to 800 will allow you to expose more background. Depending on the camera you are using, this may also introduce more noise in the image.
