the solution did not solve my problem
does dvd writing requires more power than writing cds?
if it is so then if a dvd writer is not able to write dvds and not able to
    read 8 gb dvd roms
is it that the power supply is not providing sufficient power to
    the dvd writer drive ?
i get power calliberation error when I start writing DVDs. I have a intex ATX cabinet with intex power supply.the power output written on the power supply is 400W.

And get AW-G170A Firmware 1.75 then u gonna need Binflash to update the Firmware get Win32 GUI version if u use Win Xp. Open the program press Flash find the location of the 1.75 Firmware and update it restart pc and it should work it worked for me.

Ok people. First it would be an idea to use a DVD lens cleaner, and try again. If you are running any 3rd party software/drivers like deamon tools, uninstall them and try again.

I have the same burner, and so far have not had a single problem burning or reading, unless the disc is too scratched, lol. I have used Nero 6, 7 and I now use 8. I run XP SP3 on my desktop, and Vista SP1 on my laptop.

You may need to uninstall the drive and re-install it. Also update the firmware for the drive.

Sorry those ideas didn't work. You mentioned that you are trying to burn to Dual Layer (8GB DVD9). Can you let me know which one's you are using, i.e. +R, -R, -RAM.

    Thank you

The drive wont read any burnt dvds, and ones that have stuff on it show up as blank cds. itll read actual dvd games though just fine.

The actual dvd were also burned somewhere, did you burn your stuff correctly, try playing those cd on another computer.
It doesn't look like your dvd drive is faulty.

DVD RW Disappeared from system unexpectedly, help please

I hope this helps.

I have fought with the problem for the past few days including completely rebuilding windows --- with no success . The solution after 3 days was not software related, and not fault hardware either.

The problem occured after I had cleaned my cooling coils. There is no connection, but read on.

It was down to an earth screw. There is one screw missing from my case. When removing the back of a laptop be very careful to ensure that all the screws are replaced. In my case one screw was missing and I chose the worng hole "to leave empty" after cleaning my cooling coils.

Look carefuly any you might see set into the plastic fascia of the back of the computer a small circle with a dot/another small circle inside it. It is a very small symbol. This is the earth screw for the DVD/CD drive. Without it, for whatever reason, once windows boots up, then the CD will not be recognized unless there is a CD/DVD in the drive from boot.

I have sony dvd rw aw - g170a but this drive is not working properly when i try play video cd directly into it. It do nothing. I have notice that in device manager there is yellow exclamatory! symbol. i...

The yellow exclamation point is telling you there is a problem with the device. First thing to do is uninstall the device using your hardware or device manager. Reboot. Your pc should automatically recognize the device on reboot and install the proper drivers. If not then you will have to go to the Sony website and download & install the drivers manually. If this does not fix the problem then your drive has went bad & will need replaced. Good luck & I hope this helps you out.

DVD Writer Troublesome.

i would begin by making sure that you have updated drivers installed for that drive. Even though it's new out of the box, there could be issues with the factory drivers that have been corrected. Please follow the instructions here for XP or Vista
You can check for new Sony drivers here

I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue. If you need further assistance, please post back with a comment to this thread.
If I've managed to answer your question or solve a problem, please take a moment to kindly rate this post....thanks!

Sony DVD RW AW-Q170A Burning Problem Plzzz.....Help me out: i have two drives, 1) Sony DVD RW AW-Q170A 1.70 Ver 2) Sony DVD/CD-RW Combo RYK4 Ver My "Sony DVD RW...

Check that the writable DVDs you are using are compatible (+/-) with your Sony DVD-RAM.
Go to Windows Explorer and check to see if the Sony drive is visible. It may not be connected or the Jumper switch may be set incorrectly.
Check you have drivers installed, take a look in Hardware manager.
Sometimes, it's a little difficult to copy CDs and DVDs when you have more than one burning suite installed - for some reason, they 'just don't get along'. Try uninstalling any suites other than Nero.
Or it may just be that your Sony CD-RW drive is just that, and your DVD-RW drive is just that. So it wouldn't be possible to write DVDs on the CD-RW and CDs on the DVD-RW? Though I would assume Nero would detect that and use your hard-drive as temporary storage.
In Nero SmartStart, have you selected the CD or DVD tab to correspond to the project you're burning?
