You may wish to check that the drain is working. Then after rinsing out the drain pan with a mixture of 10% bleach to 90% water, pick up a pack of Air Conditioner Sanitizer found at local hardware outlets and rinse it thru the drain pan.

You should look in the air handler( Where the indoor blower is located) or in the plenum (where the duct system originate at the air handler) for any dead and rotting rats. Residential central air systems are sealed (uses circulated air only) and do not use outdoor air.

Ammonia smell when air conditioning running,is it safe to be in trailer

Ammonia is toxic to breathe, even at low levels. Ammonia fumes are very irritating and corrosive to the eyes, nose and airways. Fumes may cause a burning sensation, coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, laryngitis, rhinitis and watery eyes, even at low levels. People with asthma or other respiratory problems may be especially sensitive to ammonia fumes, as may individuals with corneal disease, glaucoma, or severe liver damage.

Should your exhaust vent be open or close when the air condition is turn on?

Hi,
It does not mater....when the exhaust is open you will vent a bit of the stale air from the house and pull in a bit off fresh air...if it is closed, it just recirculates the existing inside air...

Kenmore 580.75151500 A/C unit smells... We've had this window unit in place for 2 years. We've cleaned the front filter and coil, but we're still getting different, peculiar smells from the A/C. Sometimes...

Hi!!

As you know, the evaporator unit (the one that the filter covers) gets a lot of condensation which is drained thru the back (outside) of the unit. That's why the unit is installed a bit tilted to the back.

The factory drain hole is too small and gets plugged up easy, some units don't even have one, the water sits for long periods of time. bacteria grows and the smell starts.

Unplugg unit from electrical outlet.

Make sure the unit is tilted back a little.

Drill two 1/4" inch drain holes in the same back bottom corner and set a bucket to collect the dirty water that will come out while cleaning it.

Get a quart of air conditioning grill cleaner (the ecol-friendly, it is purple in color) mix it on a spray bottle with water on a 1:1 ratio.

Use masking tape and some plastic to cover electrical controls in front of unit.

Following application instruccions on bottle, carefully spray on evaporator and condenser, avoiding electrical controls. Rinse with pure water, 2 qts. minimum on each grill, let it drain for about one hour.

Uncover controls and connect unit to power outlet.

Run the fan-only for about 10 min. and then the compressor.

There are more professional ways to service the unit, but performing this simple steps will keep your unit in good shape.

Don't forget to rate this post!! Good Luck!!

New Mastercool pads smell bad

The cellulose pads in a mastercool are glued together and usually the adhesive is what you smell. It may take a while for it to go away. Strange as it may seem, as the pads get more mineralization and you use it more the smell will go away. Do not use a cooler for your whole house without plenty of exhaust through a window or an updux. Coolers work best when there is plenty of freely moving air.

Carrier A/C system (P250H) smells like urine

Since the smell could only come from the inside, and you say your drain pan, and condensate line are clear, I would think that the indoor coil may be dirty, and the water isn't flowing from the coil, but dripping into the duct, and becoming stagnate. There are many possiblities, you may want to get a flashlight and check all of your duct openings for things such as moisture, and unfortunately dead animals. Sometimes mice, squirrels, rats, bats, etc. find ways into the duct, and either die, or urinate in the duct and so on. I hope you find it. Good luck.
