Error C31:40 will not take in a cassette

When you try to insert the cassette you can hear the winding mechanism whirring then C31:40 flashes up. In all other respects it appears to be ok. The cassette compartment closes fine so long as there is no cassette in it.
Can you help?

After not using my camera (Sony HVR-V1U) for one week, I took it out for an assignment but the error keeps coming up C:31:40 asking me to eject the cassette. The camera never gave me problems before this.I have tried smacking it at the bottom with the flat of my hand, flowing it with a hair dryer, shaking it, opening the cassette door for hours but nothing seems to work. The sony technician says I may have to send it in for repairs can any one help before I have to resort to this?

This is most likely a problem with one of the motor sensors and can be repaired fairly inexpensively. However, it's not a user serviceable problem and will need to be repaired by a qualified service technician.

Tape will not load; Error code 31:23

You may try the following troubleshooting steps:
Remove the battery of the Camcorder for one minute and re-insert the battery to check whether it works.
You may try resetting the Camcorder by pressing the RESET button located on it.
You may also check whether the issue occurs for all the tapes.
If the issue occurs with all the Tapes then it seems that internal parts of the Camcorder are malfunctioning.
Hence, the Camcorder requires service.

Hi Jeany,
Please see the detail below for the said error codes C31:23 & C31:22

According to the symptom and self diagnostic system the problem is in mechanical section (tape loading section) Therefore camera just need mechanical adjustment and will work fine again. This problem aries when the insertion of the cassette is improper or forced insertion.

Wont load tape

HI, this is a mechanism fault beep you are hearing. the mechanism and load motor is damaged. you will need to send this unit to the Handy cam repair depot for this repair. you will need a new load motor and loading dock mechanism as well.

HDR-HC1 Sony camcorder- reinsert the cassette error message

Bill,

The problem is with the S-reel. Take the tape out, remove the battery, and give it a slight bump. This usually fixes the issue for a couple of weeks. I haven't heard of any permenant fixes. I took my cam into circuit city (before they closed) twice for the same issue. Very frustrating when you don't know what the issue is.
