You'll need to take it to a phone shop, better taking it to the one that the cell phone belongs to (If it's a Vodafone or tmobile sim take it to a their shop) and they can do it for you, if you can't do it yourself. just for the safe side.. Some stores charge, others dont.

FYI an i phone does not need a sim to function and i do have a connection and sim from tmobile i previously had att and i do not like them so

If you need to use a T-mobile SIM into an AT&T locked iPhone, you need to unlock the mobile. You can unlock an iPhone safer and easier through remote unlocking method. You can get the remote unlocking for an iPhone 3GS from www.unlocking4u.com/apple-iphone-3gs/rs6wp9/ at affordable cost with easy unlocking instructions.

I just bought a iphone 3gs and i'm not with att. It's asking me for a sim which i dont have. Do i need it unlock before I can use tmobile. I cant even get in the phone without att sim card.

What are you doing with a phone without a connection? A SIM is a must for the phone to boot and function. Even a dead SIM would do. But SIM has to be in it. So contact the service provider and get a connection (and SIM). Unlocking may not be required as it is a Quad and 3G phone with all the frequencies.

Non tmobile sim card?

I assume you are asking about unlocking your phone. If you are a tmobile user than any tmobile sim will work in your phone even if your phone is locked. When a foreign or different compatible sim is inserted your phone will ask for the unlock code if your phone is locked. When you have an unlocked phone it automatically accepts the sim and does not ask for the unlock code since your phone is unlocked.

Unlocked iphone

As of right now no iPhones will work on any carriers other than AT&T, unlocked or not. AT&T has exculsive rights to the iPhone until 2012, so unless you put an AT&T sim card in the iPhone it will not transmit.

Plus even if you could get the phone to work on another service providers network, as soon as you plugged the phone in to your computer, iTunes would disable it...

Sorry

2 Problems..Sim Card Problems

Well, first off, an iPhone won't work at all with a T-Mobile SIM card. American iPhones are locked to AT&T's network -- only AT&T SIM cards will work in them.

As far as activating it with AT&T, make sure that the iPhone isn't connected to the computer while you install iTunes. Once iTunes is installed, connect the iPhone to the computer and iTunes should launch automatically and begin the activation wizard. Just follow the instructions on the screen and answer the questions.
