Could you let me know, what happens when you insert the External HD in the USB port............and also go to Device Manager and check if their is any Yellow exclamation mark across USB Controllers......if so, then Right click and uninstall all the USB ports and Restart the Computer.......If you see a RED mark, then just Right Click and Select Enable.....just follow the steps as given....and let me know...Take care

I have a Western Digital external hard drive. It just sits there and suddenly I cannot find it in Windows Explorer. It does show up under Device Manager, and I have uninstalled/reinstalled the drivers,...

Welcome to Fixya

Try to plug it in to a different computer. If you are getting the same thing using a different computer then its gonna be the enclosure or the HD is having the problem. One way to check is to use an extra HD and put it inside the enclosure. If the enclosure was able to detect the new HD then its gonna be you HD that is having the problem. If enclosure still cant detect the HD then the problem is the enclosure.

Please let me know if you need further assistance.

Thank you for using Fixya!

yes you could simply format the harddrive in Fat32 using your macos that would be the best solution but don`t forget to backup your data by copy pasting the files on your mac or something else and after that to move them on the external hdd again to be available on the windows machine

Simple Tech external memory 1.0 tb not registering all the sudden

First of all make sure that the USB port that you are using to connect it to your PC is a USB 2.0 port, and not USB 1.0.

Also if it came with an external power, connect it to the external power before putting on your PC.

This is because the voltage supplied by USB 1.0 is lower than that of USB 2.0 and therefore might not be enough to power up your USB Drive.

After making sure about this, power up your system, and plug the external drive, then Right-Click on my computer icon, select manage, then go to Disk Management Option.

On the Disk management option Page you should see ALL the drives installed on your system, including the hidden ones, so what you will just do is, try and locate the one representing your external drive, and right click on it. then select "Change Drive letter and Paths".

Give the drive any new, unique letter (i.e alphabet) different from the ones already on your system, and click on OK.

This should make your external Drive to be detected automatically.

Hope this helps you out.

External Hardisk Maxtor 4 One Touch not detected

Have you tried different USB cables with the drive? If the drive is self powered (no ext power supply) which I think that one is, then it needs a really good cable to draw the 5 volts from the USB port. If you have tried a known working cable, then it could be the USB controller or the disk itself. You can buy the USB box on eBay really cheap and move the drive over.

I cant detect my USB external HD for more than a minute.

There is probably a fault within the hard drive, the circuitry of the housing or perhaps the usb lead.

It would be as well to check the power supply first as some of them are less than reliable and are apt to provide too much voltage.
