It is a loose connection or cold solder and cleaning problem this is the main caused of no volume..Cold solder issues - each component is soldered into small holes on the printed circuit board which in turn connects said component to the other components. Due to time, heat, use, some solder joints would be cracked or loose. It is possible that the cold solder is still minimally connected (hanging by a thread). When the receiver turns on heat would be generated which would be sufficient to further loosen up the solder joint to the point it no longer provides electrical contact. Jarring the unit creates movement inside enough to re establish the contact, sometime good enough sometimes not enough.

Again, since the unit still operates (sometimes) then it is highly probable that there are no defective components. As you have surmised, it is possibly a loose connection, solder joints are "connections" except that molten soldering lead is used to attach/connect the component to the board, "loose connection" in this sense is equal to "cold solder".

Again on the assumption of no defective parts, then seeking a more experienced buddy for the soldering might be to your advantage. This is of course in addition to the possible electrical hazards when repairing....

Good luck:

I bought the rca rt2781de MDL when I adjust the speaker loudness and turn the unit off and turn it back on my adjustment settings are lost

I'm going to guess and say that your volume control turns round and round, but never stops like the old volume controls. Correct? That is because it is a Rotary Controller(an input to the microprocessor, computer inside inside your unit) These are known bad parts.

The issue of loosing the memory when turned on and off, is most likely due to a bad backup capacitor. The manufactures used to use batteries(on the back of the unit) but that was done away with 2 decades ago. I would make sure your speakers are correctly connected. Some times older receivers will say speaker A and speaker B on the back. Connect A. on the front there should be a button that says A and B. press A. This will tell the receiver which channel to use for sound. Try just using FM first to see if any sound comes out. If this doesnt work you might have some other problems. also you should include what brand and model number Receiver you are talking about.

The receiver is muted when playing in tuner or cd the volume is not coming through the speakers. We can hear it muted when turning up to max its very low. Lost instruction manual can you help. I think my...

I can't find a manual either. Can I assume you really mean the sound is muted for EVERY source, not just tuner and CD?

I'd guess it's either MUTED or a Tape Monitor is active. Turn the volume down, select FM as the source, tune a station and use it as your test source. Look around for indicators that give a clue.

NEVER troubleshoot anything with the volume control turned way up. You'll blow up or damage the speakers and your hearing right after you discover and correct the misplaced control.

It has lost partially the mechanical connection between the volume control knob and the volume control pot.

The knob could be "stripped". A drop of a slightly resilient glue should do the trick. Do not use rigid adhesives, as this will prevent future service to this area of your receiver....accordianman
