All of the programs in the start menu are showing empty. I can find them with a search and run them, but some shortcuts are gone.

Check this link to check the settings of your start menu. It might be that it is not properly set that is why you dont see those options on your start menu. Hope this would help. Thanks.

I am trying to restore Windows XP Professional to my laptop. Can you help? I have the original product key and proof of license number

  • Turn your computer on and insert your Windows XP professional CD in the CD/DVD reader. Monitor the screen and press the key necessary to enter the "Boot Menu," usually F8 or F12. In the "Boot Menu", select your CD/DVD drive and press "Enter."

  • 2

Press any key to boot from the CD when prompted to do so. From the "Welcome to Setup" screen, press "Enter". Accept the license agreement by pressing "F8."

  • 3

Select the Windows installation you want to restore and press "R." You will usually only have operating system to choose from. The system repair install will proceed automatically.

    Hi Sanjeev,

Just about a month back I purchased a Lenovo laptop having Intel Core i3 processor loaded with DOS.

I then installed Windows XP SP3 32-bit and there is absolutely no problem whatsoever with the compatibilty. Also, all the device drivers for Windows XP are available on Lenovo support website.

So, there should be no problem to install and run Windows XP on this laptop.

Wish you all the best. Thanks for using FixYa.

    Lost my start menu

I am assuming you have windows xp. If not, the solution will be different.

    you have to repair explorer.exe.

    try this first.
    1. Push the button to turn computer on. Wait for one second, then tap F8 repeatedly. Choose safe mode. Click administrator. If it gives you the prompt with 'yes' and 'no' buttons. Click no. Restore the computer and choose a date when the computer was working.

If you get nothing in safe mode, you have to look for your windows xp cd.
and follow the instructions here to repair windows.
I have to warn you that repairing windows may work or may make your windows inaccessible. This is the best option you have though. As a last resort, you need to reinstall windows.
To make the repair work optimally, make sure you use the reinstallation cd for windows xp WITH SERVICE PACK 2. If your xp disc doesn't say service pack 2 on it, you can look for one that does or just use what you have.
