It sounds to me like you have a problem with the sony tv. In many cases I have ran into a problem like this. If the tv blinks a certain number of times it is a defect code intended to direct the service person to the problem. I am almost posative that five blinks usually means that there is a problem in the screen circuit or picture tube. If you noticed any discoloration on the screen it means the tube has weakened, but don't lose hope. Sometimes when this problem occurs you can save the set by having your local repair center rejuvinate the picture tube. Using a piece of equiptment designed to burn debris from the filaments, a picture tube restorer/rejuvinator is your best bet in this case. One more side note, you can usually temporairily solve this problem that you are having by slightly adjusting the master screen control located on the flyback transformer, (which is the large, dark colored object with the big red wire coming from it and feeding high voltage to the tube).
