I am looking to set up an old computer with new memory and hard drive. I have windows vista from my laptop computer can I install this into my newly updated computer and how.

Generally, the licensed software for your laptop is tied to that machine/brand. If you bought a copy of vista and installed it on the laptop, you may be able to install vista on three machines if that is the version you bought.
Most Microsoft programs are locked to one machine and won't activate on another system.
Now, if this is an old, slow (less than 1 Ghz) with less than 2 gigs, it probably will run Vista very slowly if you get it installed. I'd use the OS that was on the old machine instead of trying to install Vista.

When i try to access my computer it keeps saying my vista home basic is not genuine and leaves me with no options other than use my com with few options and put a new key in when i try a key it wont work...

Is your windows vista genuine or you purchase the license of it, because you need to enter the serial number of operating system to check if it genuine os, if not there are a lot of limitation and one major limitation is you cant download any update from microsoft.

I can't get my system recovery disk to work so i can restore my computer to the orginal format

If your recovery CDs have failed you have some options

1. you can call the company who made your computer about a new set of restore discs

2. you can buy an operating system disc such as XP or vista

XP or Vista , Operating System Installation CD will setup the computer nicely , you may need drivers for certan things but not likely.

Malfunctioning restore CDs really **** me off

I just chunk em and load my XP pro disc

( multi machine volume license required if you wanna put it on multible computers )
( same with vista )

but in some cases you may find that XP pro will install on many machines just fine.

Thank you for using FixYa!

maybe your vista license is for one computer only that's why will not accept the serial or product key you need to purchase another windows vista software with license

The computers we purchased had Vista already on them, we are having a few problems which include the fact that no one can open our templates that we use when they could so so before we got the new PC's. ...

check that you have the Daylight savings in the time settings checked, or try unchecking it and then setting the time.

Also check the time set in the bios on boot up, it may be set differently.

As for Vista, Good luck. Alot of people dont have it yet so they have trouble using files made on a fvista system. MS office has a compatability install i think, check MS website.

Vista is new and has alot of bugs that havent been fixed yet, also alot of WinXP programs and games arent compatible so they wont run on Vista.

Either they have to upgrad or you have to downgrade.
Both options arent fun, I never buy a new operating system untill mine becomes obsolete. Since you got new computyers you where forced to have it installed. You could always re-install a copy of XP on the system and then wait to put vista on till more people have it.

Microsoft does this on purpose so everyone is forced to by their products even if they dont want or need it.

XP runs fie now, so why upgrade?
because MS wants to stuff there pockets.

Good luck

Windows Vista Business vs XP

Vista is a huge change for you then. I understand your frustration.

It really just depends on what your used to, your PC specs,etcs..

You do not need to buy a new computer just to have XP.

What you can do is erase Vista off the new sony, and install XP. I can help guild you if you like, on the phone it's almost a 1-3 hour talk. Depending on your experience etc..

It's an easy process downgrading to XP, all you need is:
1.A XP Disk.(The Windows XP Operating System Disk)

That's it, you get that and we can down grade your Sony to XP.

I recommend people get vista for a secondary PC like have a desktop that you do your work on, and if you have a laptop get vista on it as your personal computer. But on the desktop being your work keep it as is.

Let us know what you decide,

Thanks and I hope this helps,
