1. you possibly have a malfunction inverter board which is internal to the PC. 2. this will require a qualified tech to dismantle the pc and replace the component board that connects to the video card that is integrated to the mother board. 2. if the video card is not working this will require a new mother board to be installed. 3. there is a cable also in some models that connect the video display to the mother board and this cable could have be dislodged and the results is no screen.
This is a link to with instructions on how to change the brightness of your computor. It may be on too dark a setting now. Another possibility is that the screen has worn out and needs to be replaced. A third is that the computor itself is not working properly now, although you say you hear it on. If it is not a question of brightness (the setting is too low and now everything looks dark), I would take it to a place which repairs HP's.
Replacing a laptop motherboard is a daunting task. If you have never done it before, it will take hours to do and there will be a lot of frustration involved with taking it apart and putting all back together. The mother board will also be pretty expensive by itself and likely to be difficult to find. If you are trying to keep costs to a minimum, you might try to find an equivalent system at a site like pacificgeeks.com which sell refurbished and used systems with a 30 to 90 warranty at some amazing prices. With a laptop that is badly damaged, I usually find that it is better to replace than to repair.
First I would check to make sure that the contrast/brightness buttons on the laptop weren't accidentally changed, making the screen dark. Also, try with and without the battery and power supply. Otherwise, unless it is actually the screen that is defective, it is usually a power converter replacement, which is a small circuit board, usually under the plastic cover directly under the monitor, which supplies power to the monitor. You may want to take it to a shop as they can isolate the issue easier.....
No idea why they fixed the problem then said it is the motherboard. There are times though when the motherboard is actually bad and it does need to be replaced even with replacing the jack. With a motherboard it has to convernt electricity and sometimes the wiring is fried or bad. But if it works then let it run, if not, I would take it some where else and have another company check to make sure that they did not melt the board causing it to be a board problem
