Howto ask computer question

Before you post "me computer not work!", do bit of the homework, establish that your power cable, monitor cable, keyboard, mouse are connected, in case of laptop, check if battery is charged.

If asking the question, be succint and you need to give following information depending on the problem:

1. if computer is brandname - give name, model and year if possible
2. in unbranded computer, if you know - motherboard manufacturer and model including version, processor, ram, hard drive model
3. operating system including updates
4. problem description

for example:

1. laptop toshiba, a3, 2005 model, operating win xp sp3
2. stop loading window as windows beginnig screen

That is correct description of the problem and machine and I or somebody else with knowledge of this particluar problem can provide you with solution or advice. In that particular case I can now direct you to try to load safe mode and if your computer still stop, I can help you how to restore it to previous working state.

If you give me description - "me computer do not work" - or even better: "do not work!", and what do not work?!? telepathy is overrated! psychics are good only on TV! you did not provided any information but want solid answer...

Whit Windows 7 my Printer Xerox Docuprint P8x No driver exist. Please Help me!!!!

Before you can solve this problem, you must determine if the Xerox Docuprint P8x is supported under the operating system you are using, i.e. 7. You can find that information here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/windows-7/en-us/default.aspx

You say you are using Windows 7 ... I'm guessing you recently upgraded your computer or OS from an earlier version and that your printer worked fine with 98 or Mel~ or XP or Vista.

If you find the printer listed, you will have your answer at that listing. If it is not listed, you CAN ask Xerox if you like, for support. Don't expect much help. It is time to upgrade your printer OR - get a computer with the operating system that supports the printer, i.e. anything pre 7. Then, you can create and transfer the document you want to print to the older computer and print it that way.

Probably not the answer you hoped for ... but I think you will find it is a correct answer.

I cant back up my files,Iget COM Surrogate stop working,RPC Server is unavailable and I cant download anything on my computer

Rather than backing up to a CD. Image the whole drive.. RPC Server is a system service and may be failing due to a number of reasons. Here’s a link to Microsoft to Technet if you want: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc738291(WS.10).aspx

Problem with computer

Hi. I'm Azrul from Malaysia. Your windows installation might be corrupted and the system files might have been modified by a virus. Here is a possible solution for you:

Insert your Windows XP Setup disk in the CD rom drive. Set your boot priority to the cd rom. Wait for the option to repair your Windows XP installation. Do not format or reinstall. Just repair.

I have just purchased a PHP F/Line HEPC8512. The Microsoft Movie maker installed does not work! Any attempt to drag and drop imported video results in "COM Surrogate has a problem" and program...

Here is a list of requirements for the Microsoft movie maker to work:
Required Equipment:
• MiniDV digital video camera
• MiniDV tapes
• Computer that supports a digital video connection
• Microsoft Windows XP with Service Pack 2, which includes Movie Maker 2.1
• i.Link port (also known as FireWire or IEEE 1394) on your computer
The service Pack 2 is essential in this case and not to be confused with Service Pack 3.

After you meet these requirements, follow this set of instructions to work the Movie Maker 2.1
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/moviemaker/getstarted/movies.mspx

Let me know if you have any problems.

WINDOWS EXPLORER HAS STOP WORKING

Hey there

The problem could be because earlier version of nero You can solve your problem from doing the following:
If you are using Nero, you can try upgrading to the latest version (7.7.5.1+)
If you’ve upgraded Nero and still have the problem, you can try renaming the file C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ahead\DSFilter\NeVideo.ax to NeVideo.ax.bak. You may also need to rename NeVideoHD.ax to NeVideoHD.bak
This will break Nero Showtime, however.

There's another possible solution below of turning off DEP for dllhost, which might not work your windows explorer
Essentially, turning off Data Execution Prevention on dllhost (the COM surrogate or windows explorer) can fix this problem. This solution is detailed below.

Click on Advanced System Settings, and then under Advanced, click Settings

Select the "Data Execution Protection" tab, and then click “Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select”

Windows media center has "stopped " working. The only message I get is " COM Surrogate has stopped working

If you've been getting the error COM Surrogate has stopped working whenever you browse folders containing video or media files, you have come to a good place for some possible solutions. This problem is caused because of codecs and other COM components installed by various softwares that aren't fully Vista-compatible, like some versions of DivX or Nero.
Here's the error message:
image0.png

There are a number of possible solutions to this problem, and the right solution depends greatly on what software is actually causing the problem. Some of the most well-known problem causing softwares are DivX and Nero, but there are others that cause the problem as well.
Possible Solutions
  • If you are using DivX, you should be upgraded to the very latest version (6.5+)
  • If you are using Nero, you can try upgrading to the latest version (7.7.5.1+)
  • If you’ve upgraded Nero and Divx and still have the problem, you can try renaming the file C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ahead\DSFilter\NeVideo.ax to NeVideo.ax.bak. You may also need to rename NeVideoHD.ax to NeVideoHD.bak
This will break Nero Showtime, however. (thanks to dugi in the comments for this one)
  • You can disable Thumbnail previews, which should make the problem go away, but isn't the optimal solution.
  • The older ffdshow codec pack has been known to cause some problems. The ffdshow tryouts codec pack seems to work better. Might want to try using this one: http://ffdshow-tryout.sourceforge.net/
  • If you'd like to uninstall Nero entirely, there is a utility that they provide to help with complete uninstall that helps a lot in instances where you have a bad installation of an older version. http://www.nero.com/nero7/eng/FAQs_Nero7_NeroVision.html
  • Some users have recommended installing the Vista Codec Package in order to update all your codecs to the correct versions. I can't confirm that this works because I have not tried it myself. As always, be careful when installing unknown components and create a restore point.
  • You can use the very useful MMCompView free utility from Nirsoft to disable any codecs on the system. This is very useful to help troubleshoot exactly which component is causing the problem.
  • There's another possible solution below of turning off DEP for dllhost, which might not work for everybody. You may have to add divx+nero executables to the DEP ignore list.
Essentially, turning off Data Execution Prevention on dllhost (the COM surrogate) can fix this problem for some people. This solution is detailed below.
Right click on Computer, and choose Properties

Click on Advanced System Settings, and then under Advanced, click Settings

Here's what you should see…
