You mean, it froze up in the middle of doing stuff with no indication of heat having caused the problem?

It sounds like you get to completely reinstall Vista and the update, if it can't cope; or of course you could restore from an image and start the update again.

Your data should be fine, but you probably have a backup anyhow; if not, just install, but on a new hard drive so you can copy the data and drivers from the old HD (by mounting that in an external USB thing, for example.)

Vista Update Stage 3 Stall……

You see Installing Updates Stage 3 of 3... 0% in Vista after you start or restart your computer and it never goes past 0%. Rebooting the computer doesn't change it. It still boots to Installing Windows updates 3 of 3 and never goes past that 0% mark. Sometimes Windows will even reboot in some cases. I have found that this often happens after Windows updates. I have no idea why, but this seems to be a fairly common occurrence. The last one I repaired was caused by a Service pack 1 installation.

Here's what I have done to fix the 3 of 3 error.

You will be doing a System Restore from the Vista f8 startup

Since the computer your working on is probably stuck on this screen the first step will be a hard shut down.

Hold the power button down until the computer shuts down.

Restart the computer.

Tap the f8 key about once or twice per second to get the Safe mode screen to come up.

In Windows Vista there is a new choice when the safe mode selection comes up. "Repair Your Computer"

Highlight the "Repair Your Computer" choice.

Windows will act like it is going t boot up.

You will see a System Recovery Options window.

It will ask you to choose your language.

Click Next

Select your user and put in your password. (leave blank if you don't have a password)

You should now have choices and the one you want is "System Restore"

Follow through the prompts with the Vista System Restore program.

Remember you should pick a restore point that is 1 or 2 points back.

Once you have completed the system restore process you will be asked to restart your computer. Go ahead and restart the computer. It should start correctly at this point. If you don't have a restore point available you may not be able to repair this error. I have not tried to repair one of these without a restore point yet.

Inspiron 1525 crashed during stage 3 configuration

Follow the instructions here to repair the OS, then manually install the update that causes the issue before enabling automatic updates

Configuring updates dont stop

I'll assume last known good configuration didn't work, if you press f8 and choose disable automatic restart on failure, you should see the blue screen of death with more info, when you reboot the next time,(you may have to hold in power button for 5 secs), press f8 and see if Repair my computer is listed on the Microsoft Startup menu, if not, insert a windows vista disk and restart, booting to the cd(should happen automatically, but look for a prompt to press a key) choose your language, then choose repair my computer, choose the windows installation, and you can try to use system restore to go back before the uodates were installed and updated, then disable automatic updating so it doesn't repeat.

Seems like your VISTA upgrade didn't sucessfully upgrade itself from XP to VISTA. Seems like M$ update program detects your OS as XP and tries to install the SP3 for XP. VISTA only has SP1 released. Its currently stuck in a loop that it doesn't know what to do. Restart your laptop into safe mode by pressing F8 before the VISTA loading page comes up and go to Safe mode and backup your data and use the ACER RESTORE CD OR ACER RESTORE METHOD to help you reload your system back to factory defaults then upgrade back to vista without install any updates or connecting it to the internet.

This is my best solution to get you out of this weird and unusual situation.

Fans

First of all, we need to check whether the Cooling Fans of the Notebook are working perfectly or not.

To check this, check if you are able to feel any hot air coming from the cooling fan vent at the rear of the Notebook.

However, you can also try by updating the BIOS of the Notebook by downloading the latest BIOS Update available from the link below according to the Model Number of your Notebook which is ZD8320EA :

ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp31501-32000/sp31537.exe

Copy and paste the link in the address bar of a new IE window and press enter to open it.

Save the file on to the Notebook like into My Documents folder or on to the Desktop.

Close all the windows and applications and double click on the downloaded file.

This will update the BIOS. Donot try or attempt to restart or turn off the Notebook when the BIOS is being updated. This may make the Notebook useless. Let the BIOS be updated automatically and it should restart automatically.

You can also try purchasing Notebook Cooling pads which can be placed on which the Notebook need to be placed.

Try finding this kind of devices at the local Computer part stores.

Hope this helps...
