You mean, it froze up in the middle of doing stuff with no indication of heat having caused the problem?

It sounds like you get to completely reinstall Vista and the update, if it can't cope; or of course you could restore from an image and start the update again.

Your data should be fine, but you probably have a backup anyhow; if not, just install, but on a new hard drive so you can copy the data and drivers from the old HD (by mounting that in an external USB thing, for example.)

My computer is stuck in the configuring updates: stage 3 of 3 - 0% complete.

give it some time to install that update, if its still not working then might be possible that the update was not downloaded properly or it got corrupted while installation due to which its stucked on stage 3 of 3.

In these situations we can try to restart the computer into the safe mode and and then check which update is causing the computer to stuck on stage 3 of 3. If possible try to kill that update in safe mode too. To help you on that you need to provide me some more information.

Which operating system are you using?

I have a cpu with windows xp and it wont go past the splashscreen

Please try the following:
1.
  • Click the start button
  • Right-click "My Computer" and select "Explore"
  • Right-click the disk (your primary hard disk, most probably should be the "C" drive) and select "Properties"
  • In the properties dialog click the tab "Tools"
  • Click "check now"
  • The "checking disk" dialog appears, check both options and click start
  • You will probably see a message that chkdsk wants exclusive access to the disk and therefore wants to begin first thing after you restart your computer. Accept by clicking ok.
  • Restart your computer
When your computer restarts you will see chkdsk advancing through several different stages of verification, examining your hard disk. If it detects no errors, Windows will continue to start to your normal desktop. If there are errors, chkdsk presents a report with what it has done and waits for your confirmation.
2. If the above doesn't solve your problem, repair the windows xp by doing as is given on the page at http://www.theeldergeek.com/repairing_windows_xp.htm (please see instructions under section "Windows Installation CD - Repair Current Installation:")

Hp quick play stop working/all lights are on

Start > Control Panel > System and Maintenance > Device Manager > Sound, Video and Game Controllers. Right-click on Conexant High Definition SmartAudio HD2 and select "Update Driver Software." A window will pop up, select the option to download the drivers from the internet. Let it finish, it will prompt you to restart your computer. Restart either then or later when it's more convenient, and once you restart.

I had the exact same problem on the exact same notebook, I did decided to try this and it worked great. The only problem I'm having right now is that the volume controller didn't come up in the bottom right part of the screen like it usually does. I'm trying to find out how to get it back, but it really isn't important now that the volume control on the Quickplay keys works again.

You probably have a corrupted version, possible due to a bit of malware or the like.

Two things to do

1) download IE7 and re-install. You can get it from here...
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=9ae91ebe-3385-447c-8a30-081805b2f90b&DisplayLang=en

You can either run and install directly or save the file to insatll at a later stage

2) Download Anti-Malware. From here...
http://www.download.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html

Its a freeware version,, all you dont get is realtime protection (you have to pay to get it), but it will update the core program and the definitions no problem.#

Do an update then do a full system scan and fix any problems.

Hope this helps

Let me know

Message saying alps pointing devive has stopped working, can still move mouse pointer but cant use the scroll function

A possible fix for the Alps problem Your Alps pointer problem is probably driver related. To fix it:
1. Open Windows Explorer
2. Right click on Computer & choose properties
3. Open Device Manager (Admin password may be required)
4. Under Mice & other pointing devices, right click Alps pointing-device & choose Update driver software
5. Choose Search automatically & it will download and install the latest signed driver from the windows repositories & hopefully that will fix that problem.
