You will need to update the firmware of your DVD drive as told by the firmware error.

On a desktop system
To do this take down the model number and manufacturer of the DVD dvive (normally it is written on top of the drive itself so you may need to remove the screws that hold it in place and slide it out). Once you have the relevant information go to Google and type for example LG 24XDVD-DL-LS latest firmware update. Once you have found and downloaded the update just double click it to install.

On a laptop
Just type the model name of your laptop into Google followed by: latest DVD drive firmware update and then when you find it just download it and install.

NOTE: Be absolutely sure that the firmware update is for your drive as incorrect firmware can cause even more damage.

Download this program
http://www.freecodecs.net/fc/ImgBurn_2.5.5.0.zip

install it and run it
its a disc copying software but the reason i am saying to download it is that it will update your firmware for you

click write file to disc, then click on tools then move to drive then go to the last option on the new menu that says Check for Firmware Updates, click ok then click on the numbers listed below version( pick the one that is the latest) this will download the firmware file. extract the files from the downloaded zip and open the installer allow it to finish then click finish or exit. then restart your pc. Now try your dvd

I've tried different brands of dvds and get the same message playback feature not available on disc

The DVD player is not reading any information.
If they are blank DVDs the playback feature will not be available until something is recorded on them,
If they are prerecorded discs, either the disc is not spinning, or the pickup is not reading the information.

Upgrading windows vista 64bit

Did you download your Win7 upgrade or did you buy a boxed copy? If you have a boxed version, check in the box. My Win7 upgrade came with both the 32-bit and the 64-bit DVDs in the box. Try using the other optical disk in the upgrade package. If only one disc is in the package, contact the source where you got the upgrade. Only the package for installing a new OS (OEM or full version) comes with just the one disc included. For those, you need to specify the type of system on ordering.

If you downloaded the upgrade, you will need to get a different upgrade file and burn it to disc or make a USB installer for that version of Windows 7.

To confirm your current version of Windows, click Start and choose the Control Panel. Click on System and Security and then on System. This page will display the Windows version and append x64 if you have the 64-bit version.

Alternatively, download the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor, http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/downloads/upgrade-advisor , and it will confirm if your system is compatible with Windows 7 and which version you need.

I hope this helps.

(even the Windows 8 upgrade came with both the 32-bit and 64-bit DVDs in the box.)

Well according to this site: http://www.ehow.com/way_5152492_easy-burn-dual-layer-dvds.html you should be able to just drag and drop files (once a blank disc is inserted) and have windows burn it. This site: http://www.ehow.com/how_6979535_burn-dual_layer-dvds-windows-vista.html says it's only capable with windows Vista and higher. In my opinion, reading both these articles you should be fine with windows vista and higher but if you're still using XP you may need to purchase software capable of burning on this type of hardware. sometimes reaching out to the manufacturer will get you the software if you tell them you've lost it. There's usually a charge.

What dose this do

DVD burner or writer is a device where you can write a blank cd or dvd for data, music and videos format and also you can play or read your favorite cd or dvd mp3, audio cd and videos format. For burning you must have nero, alcohol and other burning application. In windows xp, vista and 7 are already included, simply drag your data or files you want to burn to you cdrom drive with blank cd or dvd. Then there is a button burn, click that button to write the files onto your cd or dvd. Have a nice day!

Need help with Compaq Presario v2000 drivers

Your DVD drive is missing the Burning Program not the driver. I found an update for your windvd software for windows 7 but you probably have to have the full program installed to run the update. Hope this helps.

Lite-on DVD R/W combo LH-20A1L BLO5 Blank discs not recognized

Have you checked device manager to see if you have a yellow checkmark on your DVD./CD drives? if ok, sounds to me like the maker of the LH-20A1l BLO5 either needs to fix your problem or replace it. The Nero 7 should enable it to work correctly.
