I have a VSX-918V Pioneer amp. When I push the power button it won't go past standby mode. The blue light continues to flash, but nothing shows up in the display window or anything. How can I get my amp to turn on and work with audio?

Generally speaking, an amp protects itself from heat, shorts, overloads and operator exuberance by refusing to turn on or stay on.

Overloads can be from excessive periods of high output or marginally low impedance loading by the speakers; and shorts would be wiring issues or a speaker blowing up.

You should be able to feel if it's hot. WHY is it overheating? Make sure it has sufficient ventilation on all sides and that vent holes are not blocked by dust balls. Ensure the fan (if equipped) is running as designed (some only operate on demand). Clean dust and debris from it.

If the amp comes back on after cooling, you're lucky. They only have so many self-protection cycles in their lives so continuously resetting or cycling their power without addressing the cause can do more harm than good.

If it protects immediately on a cool power up you should disconnect the speaker connections and try it 'naked'. If it comes up then diagnose which lead(s) are shorted. If it does not come up the problem is internal and should be left to an experienced and competent hands-on tech.

There is no heat coming from the amp as I have never actually had it working. This is the first time I am setting it up, it was purchased used though. When I plug it in, the blue light flashes but that is is. There is no heat being generated because nothing is actually doing anything.

So it's DOA. It needs hands-and-eyes-on technical attention (or return it).

Does its power voltage requirement match your power?

So maybe you don't have the manual. It may come in handy if this thing resurrects.

    See page 67:

The receiver suddenly switches off and the power indicator blinks.
After about a minute (you won't be able to switch the unit on during this time), switch the receiver back on. If the message persists, call a Pioneer authorized independent service company.

Overheat vsx 920

The real answer, sorry this is old -- is that a temp sensor, called a thermistor has probably gone bad in your amp. A thermistor is a resistance thermometer, or a resistor whose resistance is dependent on temperature. When these go bad in the VSX pioneer amps, the amp wont even power on with NO speakers connected to it. Just instantly goes into "im overheating, turn myself off" self protection mode. On some amps this part is easy to locate and swap out. Unfortunately, some are harder to find the physical location of this thermistor .

I've got a vsx-920-k Pioneer receiver with s-11 Pioneer speakers and a s-21w Pioneer subwoofer. All of a sudden my sub stopped working and it seems like it's stuck in standby mode (blue light...

The manual is here...

Flashing Blue is not defined in the manual.

Have you tried changing the Auto Standby switch to ON?

You can prove if the sub amp will respond to a known good input by TURNING ITS VOLUME DOWN tp start and just feeding it ANY RCA output from the receiver while playing, say, FM (to keep it simple). That way you would known in which direction the problem actually lies (internal or external).

"enter and advanced surround keys"? I don't see that documented as a special function in the manual.

BTW: other than the Flashing light, is there a malfunction?

Page 72 describes how it REALLY resets...

Resetting the main unit

Use this procedure to reset all the receiver's settings to the factory default. Use the front

panel controls to do this.

1 Switch the receiver into standby.

2 While holding down the TONE button, press and hold the STANDBY/ON button for about three seconds.

3 When you see RESET? appear in the display, press ENTER .

OK? shows in the display.

4 Press SYSTEM SETUP to confirm.

OK appears in the display to indicate that the receiver has been reset to the factory default
settings.

Pioneer power LED is Blinking

If that didn't work, with the power off try holding Tune + and Auto surround/stream direct buttons for a few seconds to reset the protection circuits. Make sure to keep 8" of empty space above the unit for air, as overheating can cause this problem. If it fails again, there could be bigger problems, so get it checked

Stand by button flashes but receiver wont turn on

I have vsx-d812 that has an AMP ERR in error menu. the troubleshooting was found to be Q696 and Q697 in the DC prot. area on "C" board, up near front toward diplay in center of c board. You can get access to error codes on VSX pioneer unit by pressing "enter" and "adv. surr." simultaneously for 2 sec. The display should show what error code you are experiencing. I believe there are three diff. error codes. 1) AMP ERR 2) OVERLOAD 3) BOAD ERR (not mistyped) I hope this helps pinpoint error code for ya.
