Question about Whirlpool GH7155XHS Microwave Oven

Open Question

Whirlpool YMH1170XS This microwave was purchase in Dec. of 2006. Just recently it stopped working. When I push the "30 sec" button or any other time amount, it turns on, makes a funny noise and then shuts off. I've noticed that our lights in the kitchen flicker when this happens. The fan still works as well as the light over the stove. Any ideas?

We've been using it how it is for over a year now with no problems. Would having it not on its own breaker start to cause a problem at this point? When I enter in a time, it shuts off after 2 seconds everytime. I've also noticed that when I open the door, the light inside doesn't come on. I think It would be more like somebody hitting the stop button as the outside light and fan still work.

Sounds like the microwave may not be on its own breaker. It should be.

When it "shuts off", does it seems like someone hit the Stop button or like someone unplugged it?

There should also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel, which is very helpful when troubleshooting.

The most common cause of that is a shorted or blown high voltage rectifier diode.

When pushed, the 30 sec button says 3 minutes. none of the display buttons work.

Have you inadvertently programmed your microwave for "autostart"?
Your model microwave has the ability to be programmed to go on at any given time of the day/night, even when you're not home so that you can have a defrosted and cooked meal waiting for you when you get in.
I know that if you hit the 30 sec button or the minute button when your micro is programmed to autostart it will tell you the time that it's programmed to autostart or the amount of time that's left for it continue cooking.

Have you tried unplugging it for a few minutes?
This should clear it's memory and then all you'll have to do is set the time on the regular clock if you want.

Here's where you can download and read your owners manual for further instructions on how to use the autostart feature and everything else:

I have a 10 year old MH7130XE Whirlpool microwave oven. The oven and key pad both work, and the oven heats just fine. The problem is the oven begins running as soon as you open the door...without pushing...

I'm assuming you mis-typed and meant the oven begins running when you SHUT the door and stops when you OPEN the door. Please tell me this is what you meant! If the microwave oven runs with the door open, UPLUG IT IMMEDIATELY AND DO NOT USE IT!!!

If the oven begins running without pushing the start button then the controller is bad or the Start button is worn out and making contact without pushing it. (Most likely it is your controller.) Generally, it is not worth the cost to replace the controller on a 10 year old microwave. Probably time for a new one.

But if you want, you can call Whirlpool and see what they suggest at 800-253-1301.

If this was helpful, please select YES to the first two RATINGS questions. Good Luck!
