Question about Garmin GPSMAP 168 Sounder GPS Receiver
My 168 Sounder display is not coming in completely. There are a number of vertical "lines" where the unit isn't displaying anything.
Any suggestions for correcting this are greatly appreciated.
I had the same problem and contacted Garmin. This is being caused by a software issue that started when the government updated the software in their WAAS satellites. The Garmin website will give you instructions on how to correct this but I have listed them below:
Power on unit
Press enter to get past the I Agree screen
Now you should be on the satellite page, press the menu button one time
Highlight WAAS off and press enter
By doing this, the unit should not shut down.
I followed these instructions and my 168 Sounder is working fine.

Delete the tracking the unit has stored for all your trips...it has probably used up all it's memory to 100%.. It won't erase your waypoints, just the tracks. Worked for me

The transducer should be on a plug about 2 feet down the power cord. You can just unplug it and see if that works. Mine has the same issue and i think its the GPS antenna that is blown. If i unplug it the sounder works fine. with it plugged in just get a start up screen then a blank screen with a vertical line on it and the units is locked up. See my other answer here as i have just orderd a new antenna and should know if this fixes it before the end of the weekend.
