Question about Tascam DP01FX All-In-One Recording Package Microphone

1 Answer

Tracking with external effects

I have noticed that the external effects loop does not apply to tracking, it is only active during mixdown. I have a DOD FX7 guitar processor, is it okay to plug the guitar into the processor and the processor output to the DP-01fx input jack, rather than using the effects loop? I would like the option of being able to switch effects while tracking.

How to record with Multi-effects feature on Tascam DP 01

I'm not familiar with the Tascam DP-01 but many multi-track recorders don't commit effects to the track until the mixdown phase. The thinking being that you cannot eliminate a "bad choice" effect once it's down to tape (old school term) and so they allow adding the audio tweaks at the final stages of recording. Here they hope you can appreciate the entire mix and then decide what sweetners to add.

That is the way it is supposed to work... It is a level control to control the level sent to an EXTERNAL effects unit. What external effects unit are you using? Brand and model please. If you proportion more to the effects loop, you want to make sure the EXTERNAL effects unit is on and its gain controls are up. The foot switch input should control the EXTERNAL effects unit when you plug the footswitch into the EXTERNAL unit. The footswitch input on the amp itself has NOTHING to do with the external effect loop, it only affects the amp's own DFX unit.

How multitrack recording works is assigning each recording to a different track. A way around this is to record the vocals to track one, then your harmony to track two. Save that as a single recording, or mixdown, then open that saved mixdown to track one. You may need to be connected to a computer to do this.

I use the same technique when using Cool Edit Pro (outdated, yes, but I've been using it for 4 years, and I know most of the ins and outs), especially on the guitar tracks, where for studio sound, you've gotta use 4 total tracks. Putting two tracks together frees up your processor, and uses less in the way of effects, as well.

Hope that helps!

Hi, I have used acid 6 for years on pc and never come accros this. Are the bit rates correct to the new track? Make sure you are not using any rewire objects on those tracks, maybe try re-bouncing them and making the file again with a new name.

I cannot connect my bose 901 series v1 active equalizer to my denon av surround receiver avr-891

Short answer from personal experience.

There is no way around this part. Get a separate power amp for the 901's if you want to use them in a multichannel way or alongside non-901 speakers.

The reason: You can't use the Active EQ (or ANY processor) in a tape Monitor loop with anything but 2-channel stereo material. As soon as you activate the loop you lose digital sources.

Adding to YOUR particular problem is that the Denon doesn't have a volume-controlled pre-out to feed that amp. If you want to deal with controlling the separate amp volume manually you COULD connect the Active EQ between DVR Out and the 901 amp IN but you would have a stereo mixdown instead of true front channel from the speakers.

Bummer.

The loop and the manual tone store functionality !

Usually the loop in is used with an EXTERNAL effects module where the audio signal is "looped" out through the external effect module and then back to the power amp to drive the speaker in the cabinet. The LOOP IN jack would receive signal from the EFFECTS module OUT jack.

The source to go TO the effects module INPUT may come from a jack such as preamp out, or sometimes the same loop jack if it usess the TRS (Tip-Ring-Sleeve) connection method.

If you do not have an external effects module, all this is a moot point in your case.

GENERAL QUESTION

Hi,

I believe what Tascam means by the 'effect loop' on the 2488Mk2 is simply a send loop within the device which internal effects can be set on (vs. a the 'send loop' which exists when you send a track out the sends, through an external effect device, and then back through one the the 2488 inputs). This effect loop is sent to the stereo bus as well as the bounce sub mix.

To use the internal effects in this way you'd select a track with the 'select' button for the track (or you can do multiple tracks by repeating this process for each track one at a time). Then press the send button and on the top of the screen you'll see the effects loop. Just set your send there to 100 or so and that track will be sent to the internal effect loop and be affected by whatever single effects you have turned on. To print these tracks with effects you can either premaster or create a bounce mix. Just make sure you mute any tracks you don't want in a bounce because a bounce will record anything which is on the stereo bus.

(See page 42 in your manual for Tascam's explanation for using the single effect and page 58 for how to create a bounce submix).

Hope this helps.

Mic effects

The short answer is that you'd use the multi effect (or one of the 4 mic effect) to one channel for effecting your mic input. Reverb should be added later using the single effect. You'd send the already recorded track to the send effect and then return it to another track and 'print' it using a bounce. 'Send' sends the signal to the effect and returnsit to the mix bus. So to add reverb to a track you'd send that track to the single effect after configuring the reverb effect the way you'd like it, and then make sure all of the other are turned down and record it to an open track during a bounce.
The single effect is what would be referred to as a 'send effect' and is designed to be used at mixdown or during a bounce. In the 2488 the single, aux and send effects are all 'send effects'. These take an existing sound and change it. Examples are reverb, chorus, delay, phaser and flanger. The internal effects on the 2488 can be used or external sound processors can be fed with the sends and returned to inputs on the 2488.
The 2488's multi-effect, as well as the mic x4 effects are 'insert effects' to be used on the input signal when recording. Examples of insert effects are compression, expansion, gating, limiting and distortion.
You can send all channels (or multiple channels) to the same effect send, but they all must be sent to the same effect (or chain of effects) at once. You cannot for instance send channels 1,2 and 5 to one send effect and 3 and 4 to another at once. You'd have to do something like that in two seperate operations.
Insert effects cannot be shared among channel strips. Each sound source needs its own insert effect. The 2488 has one multi-effect box which acts like an effect chain on one channel or 4 mic effects which can be assigned to 4 mic inputs at once. Each input assigned uses one of the mic effects up (a stereo pair will use 2) of the available 4.
The main thing to remember is that there are the 2 different effect types. Sends are for adding something to the signal like reverb, chorus, delay, phase shift, flange (on the 2488 these are the single effect and the aux send effects) while insert effects act on the signal modify or subtract from it (compression, gate, limiter, distortion).

Hopefully this helps. I know it can be quite confusing starting out.

if the multitrack doesnt have built in effects you need to but an extrenal vocal effects processor that you can wire up to it. try lexicon products, they offer really good realistic vocal effects rack units.
