Re: 80 g ps3 will only read the ps2 games
Your blu-ray laser has failed. it has three parts, blu-ray, dvd, and cd. They all use different components so when one fails the others still work. Your laser needs to be replaced. I offer that service for $130. I believe sony does it for 140. good luck.

The PS2 has always had trouble with certain discs. And yes you can often tell by the "color". RE4 although from ancient was pre PS3 and basically some of the newer games wont work on the "old" PS2's as well. Partially due to the fact they are a bit dirtier and worn out and cant read the faster speeds as well. You might want to consider purchasing a "new" PS2 ($99) that wont have the same problem.
if it will still read ps2 cds dvds and ps1 games then your blu laser just burnt out this is a common problem. if you are under warrenty still send it back if not you can pay sony $200 to fix it or loose your warrenty and spend $80 and 10 min of your time to fix it. message back if you wnat to know more and how to fix yourself
some 80 gb ps3's are backwards compatible, some are not.
unfortunately it looks like you have one that isn't. my suggestion is to look on the back of the unit, underneath the barcode. the serial number will be there, followed by the model number. if you're model is not CECHE01 it is not backwards compatible.
Solved!!!at least in mine.. I found that the internal PS2 memeory card was corrupted..I deleted it and created a new one...problem solved!!! I lost all my saved games though..but still price worth paying to play my PS2 Games
