The unit was attached to a 6ohm set of speakers, I suspect that one short circuited. Apparantly this has happened before and has been corrected with a simple system reset?????

  • ganymead Jul 31, 2008

Yep that did it!!! Thank You

Normally this behavior is indicative of what is called "protectoin" mode. This means that a problem has been detected and the output section is not turned on. This is not usually cleared by a reset unless the initial cause of the problem has been removed. The reset in this case is a power off/on sequence.

Now as far as the actual problem is concerned, the most common causes of this is either shorted speaker wires or bad speakers. If that had occurred it is possible that one or more of the output transistors has shorted as a result. If the shorted speaker or wire is the problem, then dis-connecting the speaker wires fro the back of the unit will allow the unit to start up correctly. If hte wires are removed and the condition continues, then the problem is internal tot the receiver.

Can you update this with what happens when the speaker wires are removed please?

Thanks,
Dan

Try pushing these buttons at the same time for a few seconds:
Advanced Surround + Enter..

'Advaned Surround' will be found in the front panel and 'Return' near the multi-jog dial.

Its a fail safe feature to lock the unit if its damaged, It will not power on until the error is corrected, This can be eighter in the power supply or the main board. It can be as simple as a capicator or cracked solder to as complexed as an IC. Unfortunately to tell you the exact error is difficult from where i sit, You will need a multimeter and contunity checking until you find the error. This problem requires hands on assistance an isnt possible from a remote fix.

No power output or display.green standby light flashes.

Sounds like either a blown mainpower fuse or the thermal fuse for the power transformer. If the protect circuit was kicking in, the display would light up, but then turn off with a red blinking light. the green light with no display means the transformer is not getting power.

I have a Denon AVR1603, recently I plugged computer in AUX connections at rear (not loud) and it kept tripping out. Eventually it tripped and now the the on/standby light fashes but nothing else happens....

The LED flash indicates that unit goes into protection. Check the power transistors, the 0.22 ohm or 0.47 resistors in the output of the transistors.

Standby light won't turn off on receiver r 840. Tried doing what manual says and turn off autostandby mode but still light stays on. ...how do you turn off ? i have tried everything..or does it always stay...

"Standby" means the unit has wall power but is not yet turned ON by you. When you turn the unit ON, the Standby light should extinguish and other signs of life should be evident.

It is basically an indicator that there is potential life in the unit. If it ever truly turns OFF, that is a problem.

PROTECTIVE FEATURE

In some cases, the STANDBY indicator may blink slowly, twice per second. In this case, turn off the unit, unplug the power cord, and check the following points.

Make sure the speaker cables are not reversed and connected to the wrong sides (+ and -) on the unit.

Make sure the speaker cables connected to the unit are not shorted. (Check both the unit end and the speaker end.)

Make sure the volume does not exceed the level that the unit is capable of producing.

When using the unit in a rack or other enclosed space, heat may build up inside the unit and cause a fire. When installing the unit, be sure to leave suffi cient space between the top, back and both sides of the unit and walls or other AV components to prevent the internal temperature from rising.

After checking these points, plug in the power cord and use the remote controller to turn on the unit. Turn down the volume before resuming playback. Confirm that there are no problems with the speaker connections and playback performance.

If this symptom recurs, request service at your nearest service center.

In rare instances, the unit may enter standby mode and the STANDBY indicator may blink rapidly, 8 times per second. In this case, unplug the power cord and request service at your nearest service center.

The problem is the audio output ic's, one or more channels has developed a short causing the safety shutdown to engage. The only solution is take it back where it was purchased and since it is under warranty it should be repaired free of charge if not a possible exchange.

Is the red light flashing at first?
The unit may be going into protect mode. Lets hope it has done the job and the receiver has protected itself from failure.
Protect mode can result from speaker wires touching each other or the Amps2_bing.gif metal case. Check that first.
It can also be caused by unstable ohm loads if too many speakers2_bing.gif are connected to any of the outputs especially zone 2.
If you can remove all speaker wires and turn the unit back on. If it stays on, turn the volume down on the main zone and zone 2 if connected. Then reconnect speaker wires.

Standby light stays red and will not turn unit on.

Try to reset the macroprocessor. Unplug the unit from AC, hold both buttons SPEAKER A and SPEAKER B and plug the cord in outlet. After display flashes several times release the buttons. No result? - repair shop.
