Laptop Turning On But Nothing Happens - Replaced...

I thought I would let you know that I posted a response to your solution...I didn't think you would know otherwise. In short, I don't think your solution solves the problem because I did switch out the memory chips individually.

    I can't get to the bios because all that happens now when I turn it on is the fan comes on and the screen is black. I was actually in the bios, about to do a diagnostic when it froze up the last time.

    Yeah I figured that was what I would end up having to do. I have never replaced a motherboard on a laptop. I would imagine that as long as I replace it with the exact same model, I wouldn't run into any software problems that would warrant reformatting the HD, but what if the new motherboard has a different graphics chip?

I see, now before you rate me, (cause I like my rateing lol) can you get to the bios? And if so, does this machine have a hard drive diagnostics test?

    I'm going to say that this is a motherboard component versus a memory problem, or like you had suggested, a problem with the memory slots. Most shops don't have the ability or the knowledge to test and repair motherboards, and will waste your time and monet trying just to tell you that you have to replace the motherboard. So, unless you can find a shop that will diagnose it for free, I'm going to suggest that you go ahead and replace the mother board, because it could very well ruin the new memory. I hate being the bearer of bad news!!!

    You can replace the board with any T40 series board, so if you want to upgrade to the T41, go for it. You won't have to reformat the drive, if it has different components, the hardware wizard will find them and install them if the drivers are there. If not you will need to go to IBM's support site and download the drivers. That easy!!! IBM's site has service manuals and component replacement instructions for their machines, you might take a look and see if they have them for your machine. If you have any more questions feel free to ask, I'll be out for the evening, but I'll get to them first thing tomorrow.

My computer won't turn on

If you tried turning the laptop on with NO battery but plugged into the mains and you get no response, even no little lights flickering then its possible that something to do with the motherboard (obviously, you might think) but get someone too look inside it if you can, something might be fried.

It seems you're having issues with the internal video card or motherboard.If you're not able to boot to bios it means your laptop didn't pass the POST (Power On Self Test). tried running the dell diagnostics.

here are the steps:

1. turn off the laptop.

2. while the laptop is off, press and hold down the FN key then press the power button. The dell diagnostics should come up. If nothing happens, you should call Dell to check more options.

This sounds like it may be a Power controller problem, (circuit that controls battery charging etc...) To fix this the mainboard usually needs to be replaced, which will mean that you will have to send it to SONY to be "serviced".

Keyboard totally frozen/non-responsive on dell studio 1737 laptop

I'm very compulsive with my electronics, especially if they are new. I, myself, would have it sent in and I would complain why I spent X ammount of money on a doorstop, you know. If you don't have a warranty you can take to BestBuy for free inspection and what you might be able to physically do to fix it.

My toshiba laptop no response

If its not doing anything at all ,your power board may be bad as well as your ac adapter maybe faulty.Also the power jack where the adapter plugs in may need resoldering or replaced.

My dell laptop is not turning on with the ac or battery. The LED lights up for a hot min then it turns off. Nothing happens after that.

Sounds like you have short circuited your Motherboard badly. This will generally cause laptops to quit functioning at all. Get it replaced. Really is the only option.
