Question about Archos AV 700 160-Hours Video Recorder

Damaged directory after pulling USB cable out from Mac?

I think I damaged my AV700's 'directory' (or something) by disconnecting the USB cable from my mac powerbook after the mac had crashed/frozen. Now the AV700 won't show up as a hard drive on the mac at all.
Does anyone know how I can fix this or get the mac to see the AV700 again?
Would be super grateful!

thanks battlesmith, I tried the AV700 with another mac and it doesn't show up there either, so the problem is with the AV700.

The AV700 knows when I plug the USB cable in, because it switches to 'hard drive' mode. So I don't think it's definitely a usb hardware problem?

The manual states that you shouldn't disconnect the USB cable without unmounting the AV700 from the computer or you risk 'damaging the data / directory' . As I have carried out this bad disconnection procedure, is it likely I've damaged the directory or something software related?

  • mekka Jul 31, 2008

thanks, I have now tried this procedure but the AV700 still does not appear on my mac desktop.

The AV700 display does say 'USB cable connected, hard drive' when the USB cable is in.

But I still can't find it on the computer.

    Any help please?

Hello,

Yes, you have damaged the device. USB provides active voltage between your Mac and the TV Reciever. By not unmounting it you will have to do a factory reset or have the factory do this. So, this may require you to return it to the factory for repairs under warranty or out of warranty.

There 'may' be a reset button recessed in the back or underneath the receiver. Its about the size of a ball point pen head or paper clip end. If you see one, press this in and hold it in for a full 30 seconds.

If you do not have one on your model series, you will need to contact Archos directly and tell them what happened. I'm sure your Mac is okay. It has safety features to protect itself. I suspect your receiver does too, but much like resetting a circuit breaker or replacing a fuse this may only be done with a reset switch or some other proprietary methodology.

In any case, you are best off looking for and resetting the receiver or contacting Archos.

Sorry, I can't give you any better advice than this.

Regards,
Worldvet

This is a reset and battery problem, take the battery of AV700 and leave it for 2 hours, then you must full charge the battery,so when you put it back it will power on..

hope this may help;

Hello,
If the Usb is not damaged first Try to connect to another mac system and check if it recognises the device...If not the Usb of the device is damaged!!..For your additional information!!..
The USB Port of the AV700 can be configured as "Hard Disc" or "Windows Device". Your Mac will recognize the device only if it is on Hard Drive mode. You can change the USB Port configuration of the device, in the menu Display Setup Screen > System> USB Port.

Please post back how things turned on or for further assistance..Thank you!!...

Regards!!...

Yeah Jus LIke any hard disk, If you disconnect the USB without unmounting the device you have High Risk of Damaging the drive..In the case AV700 which is more sensitive you Must not take a risk!..Well now theres a Probability for the device to get Corrupted due to improper disconnection and hopefully the device should work after a Service..Dont worry, better take it to the Service centre where they will estimate the Condition of the Device and If possible they will Fix it back !!..Dont forget to Claim your Warranty if you have one!!...

    Good Luck!!...Regards!!!...

Samsung ML-2525W printer & Mac OS X 10.6

I think there are 6 ways (at least?) to connect this printer:
(1) Direct to Mac (or PC) via USB Cable (2) Direct to Mac (or PC) via Ethernet Crossover Cable (3) Ethernet to router/switch, with Mac/PC also via Ethernet to router/switch (4) Ethernet to router/switch, with Mac/PC via WiFi (802.11 wireless) (5) WiFi to router, with Mac/PC via Ethernet to router/switch (6) WiFi to router, with Mac/PC also via WiFi
As (1) should be simplest, tried this first. First document would print instantly and completely, next doc would hang in queue with unexpected msg, "Printer is offline." Only way to print 2nd doc was to power cycle (off-on) the printer. This problem occurred whether 2nd doc was sent to printer before or after 1st doc had printed. Tried 2nd USB cable, tried new driver, tried reinstalling printer; same problem. Spoke to both Samsung and Apple support, including both on a conference call; never got this to work and never clarified if problem was in printer hardware/software, driver, or something else.
Nothwithstanding USB problem, did succeed in modes (4) and (6), although custom wireless config needed since my network does not broadcast SSID and requires an encryption password. Also required different driver for wireless config (as opposed to USB).

Since the drive crashed in the middle of a data transfer it probably has a damaged directory. Try connecting the drive to your Mac and run DiskWarrior on the drive to repair the directory and allow the drive to mount.

When i have my WDBABM0010BBK 1 TB passport connected to my macbook pro it disconnects easily when i barely touch it. The cord is too sensitive

I would try a different USB cord, and see if that fixes it. Otherwise if it's more sensitive on the side of the hard drive, talk to the store where you bought it. If it's more sensitive on the side of your Macbook, talk to apple.

If the drive was disconnected while in use, it could have a damaged directory. One way to tell is if you can see the physical volume ( the line where it shows the drive name and size) in Disk Utility but the logical volume ( the indented line where the drive name is) is greyed out, generic like disk1s2, or missing. The directory can often be repaired by DiskWarrior and caused your drive to mount and function properly. Please let me know if you have any questions.

The blue light on my Maxtor is blinking really fast and my Mac no longer recognizes the connection. How can I fix this?

Have you tried restarting your Mac (with the Drive still connected)?

Otherwise try:

1. Disconnect the USB cable from your Mac.
2. Restart your Mac.
3. Reconnect the USB cable to a different USB port on your Mac (like the keyboard USB port for example).

See how you get on. Let me know. Regards,

How do i add downloaded ringtones to the menu so that i can select them when setting the ring tone for an individual. right now the menu only gives me the canned ringt ones

You will need to access your phone as an external storage device and save your ringtones onto the SD card.

Plug your phone into your computer with the USB cable. On your phone, pull the notification screen down and select USB connected. Select "Mount". Your computer will now recognize your phone.

Go to your SD card and you will need to create a directory titled Media. Inside this directory, create another directory title Audio. Within this directory, create one final directory titled Ringtones.

Place any supported sound files in that final directory and they will appear in your ringtones list.

You can also create an Alarms directory, and use any supported sound files as alarms for your phone.

Remember to pull the notification screen to turn off the usb storage.

Hope this helps, and good luck.

Yes, we had few situation with different digital cameras and professinal camcorders damaged in I/O port board due to power surge type damage. It is rare but depending on design of circuitry combination with laptop system. Due to the current present on usb port it is important to turn the camera off before unplugging the camera or any electronic devices. Remedy for the damage requires repair by technician. -James
