Question about PC Desktops

I have a toshiba laptop (VISTA Ultimate) that connects wirelessly to a Linksys router. I try to connect to my office ftp site but always get a timeout. I've tried both the FTP commands (DOS) and the windows explorer address bar ie: ftp://dwrftp.atate.co.us I cannot connect to this ftp site. Can you tell me if I have settings wrong on the linksys router?

    1) The router has been reset numerous times during the past year.
    2) I have never been able to connect to this FTP site from my Vista laptop.

So, I don't think resetting the router is the answer.... but thanks.

  • vbeal Jul 30, 2008

I can connect to other websites .... http, https. I don't know any other FTP sites to try directly .... can you give me one and I'll try it?

  • vbeal Jul 30, 2008

battlesmith, I cannot conect to ftp://ftp.thecpl.com . I can ping both ftp://dwrftp.state.co.us and ftp://ftp.thecpl.com and get a reply though ...

  • vbeal Jul 31, 2008

    Battlesmith:

I don't know how to do a port forward for FTP on the linksys router. Can you help me with that?

  • vbeal Aug 01, 2008

The link didn't help since I don't have those particular tabs .... I contacted Linksys to get additional help. After talking with Linksys Tech Support, I believe now that my ISP is blocking the FTP ports. I don't think it is related to the router at all.

So, I guess I'm out 10 bucks but since you did try to help me, I thank you ...

    1. Ensure that Port 21 is open in your Vista Firewall.

    2. Check to see if you can connect to the server using active mode.

      1. Open command prompt

      2. Type ftp and press enter

      3. type open sitename.com and press enter

      4. Enter your name and password as prompted

      5. Type dir and press enter. If you see the directory structure of the FTP server then you know that you can connect.

      6. Type close and press enter

      7. Type quit and press enter

    3. Change settings in IE 7 (I only tested this fix with IE7)

    4. Under the Advanced tab in IE Tools\Options

      1. Uncheck the “Use Passive FTP (for firewall and DSL modem…) checkbox

      2. Check the “Enable FTP folder view (outside of Internet Explorer” checkbox

Hi,

To my knowledge (WRT54G and WRT300N), requires that port forwarding be setup for FTPs. To setup port forwarding on these routers, your Toshiba laptop needs to have a static IP address. Say 192.168.1.11 (SubNet Mask 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway 192.168.1.1).

Access the LinkSys Web Interface (browser to 192.168.1.1, enter User Name and Password). Click on Security tab, un-check "Block Anonymous Internet Requests", Save Settings, Click "Applications & Gaming", click on "Port Range Forward", Enter:

  • Application "FTP1"
  • Start "21"
  • End "21"
  • Protocol "Both"
  • IP Address "192.168.1.11"
  • Enable "Check"
Click on Save Settings.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

    Hi again,

The above procedure is not usually necessary for most FTP sites, however, since you could not connect to your office's FTP site, the above should resolve your concern.

    Cheers.

Additionally, you may want to check/reconfigure your Vista firewall and/or antivirus.

Do you have ports forwarded and triggered in the linksys router? by default t a linksys router defince FTP on port 21 (which is the default to every router / firewall)

do you have another computer that has the same problem?

perhaps another PC behind the linksys that can access the FTP site?

do you have another computer BEHIND the linksys router that can access the FTP site? because if not there is a possibility that you are trying to access an FTP site that is configured for domain log-in, like one that corporate offices use.

because for some reason i cannot ping the ftp site you gave, nor perform a trace route to it, do you happen to have the IP address of this FTP site?

Well then if you cannot access any ftp then you can try the method which i have posted!..The possible reason is your behind a Firewall so your restricted and cannot access a ftp..So try to disable the firewall and Then try to "portforwarding option" which should solve your problem!!

    Good luck!!...Regards!!!...

Cycle both, meaning turn both wireless radios off then on, which might mean unplug the router and reboot the laptop. Try again. If nothing, make sure the router is set to broadcast the SSID by going to 192.168.1.1 and using the web interface to the router. Check those other settings and make sure your wireless is enabled and all. Also, Vista likes to corrupt wireless settings, so if the connection is already saved, remove it from Vista's wireless list of preferred networks and start again from scratch.

this is because your wireless router is a router, and your linksys is also a router. Both are attempting to do routing, and they're colliding with each other.

Go into your linksys router's settings, and set it's IP address to have the SAME subnet mask as your wireless router, (The third number in the ip address has to be the same)

e.g. if your wireless router is 192.168.0.1, make sure your linksys is 192.168.0.2
if your wireless router is 192.168.2.1, make sure your linksys is 192.168.2.2

After that, turn OFF the dhcp server on your linksys router (do this in the linksys config page).

After that, plug the LAN port of your linksys to the LAN port of your wireless router.

Your linksys will now be acting like a "Switch" which is an extension of your network. Voila!

Is the router for your use only or for a lot of people, if it's your own dedicaced router, simply reset it by the button on the back or the router should solve your problem.
If not working, by the router config; usually accessed through your browser, typing in the adress 192.168.1.1, find the security menu, and the MAC filtering option, deactivate it, and retry.
If always not working, we stay here...

Hey

for this you gotta now the following:

1. ssid : this is the name of your access point (router)
2. key/passphrase: this is the network security key you configure your router with (if your router has a default configuration (the one that came with the device right out of the box which is not recommended) your key may be a blank key ... you simply don't have one set up.
3. the encryptation method: wep, wpa, wpa2. this goes again to how you have your router configured and if your don't have anything configured with your router in regards to encriptions (not recommeded) you may simply not have any encryptation that you need to select here.

important:
make sure your wireless adapter is working and is on:
your laptop may have a switch on the front to turn your wireless adapter on (i don't know what model of laptop you have so you may want to check the user manual that came with laptop to find the switch) or you may have to turn it within windows. (also check the user manual of your laptop)

now that you have the info needed and your adapter is on there are 2 ways to do this:

1. using your beloved acer empowering technology:
I found this that may guide you through the process of setting up your wireless connection
ftp://ftp.support.acer-euro.com/notebook/empowering_technology/acer_enet_management.pdf

look under the title: SETUP A NEW PROFILE and follow the instructions..

now if acer empowering does not work... you can try to setup your wireless connection with windows,

2. Using windows vista to setup your wireless connections:
I'm assuming you're using vista so here's a set of instructions with pictures you may want to take a loot at and follow

http://www.home-network-help.com/vista-to-connect-wireless-network.html

let me know how it went!
if problems.. post what you see and we'll try to give you hand. (please give as many details as possible)

assuming you have a wireless router, make sure you have purchased the correct one, as cable and dsl routers are different, as cable modems need to be connected to the router via a cable and dsl normally have a modem that can't be connected to a router, and you will require a modem/router.

You can only share a wireless connection when the line comes directly to the router and not through a pc, as the pc with the connection will have to always be on.

Try resetting your IP address:
The laptop may be trying to use the IP address from the old router.

1) Click Start (assuming Windows 2000, XP, or Vista)
2) Click Run
3) Type in CMD
This will take you to a black command box
4) Type in: ipconfig/release
The chart should show your IP address as 0.0.0.0
Once this has happened, proceed to step 5
5) Type in: ipconfig/renew
You should now see a new IP address listed.

Also note that you need to set up your network key (assuming that you are using one) on both the router and laptop.
Make sure that your router is set up to perform as DHCP server.

Wireless g wrt54g router

First of all, are you connecting with a PC or a Notebook?

If you have the Linksys router, you should replace the MS utility with the Linksys utility it figures your linksys wireless lan card
There are programs you can use to keep track of your router and connections...One such program is called Port Mapper...

http://3d2f.com/programs/34-197-port-mapper-download.shtml

Does your problem happen everday...or every 3 weeks...are you doing anything in particular when you are getting the inability to use the connection?
There is a new Vista patch out there I recommend downloading.
