After I push the power button, the screen lights up dimly, and the fan goes on. No startup chime.

Is there a keyboard combo I can use?

Has the hard drive been replaced yet? Computer hard drives have a 4 year average life. the last g3 shipped in 2002.................The G3 ibook was also infamous for bad logicboards or separated GPUs. Check

! for research only- I take no responsibilty if you turn your failing ibook into a brick or set your block on fire, but I know this technique very well!

My g3 laptop has a blinking mac face and internet globe and question mark what do i do

Hi, Somehow it has been set to boot from a net server of some type.
Tyrn the Mac off then turn it back on while holding the ALT key down.
After a moment or two you shold see a new start-up screen wich will show the globe that you see, but it will also show the internal HD as well.
Wait until you get the pointer back, click on the HD and press return on the keyboard or the forward arrow on the screen.
The computer should then start up from the internal HD.
Once it is up and running , go to System Preferences (under the Apple menu) and select "Startup Disk".
Click on the hard-drive icon and then close the window. That should set it correctly.
Do another (normal) restart and make sure it works.Post back and let us know.

Start up the computer from the system disk that up have. Put the disk in and start the computer with the C key pressed until the star screen comes up. Then troubleshoot from there.

When I open the screen completely the monitor goes off. It stays on if I only open it 6 inches

There's more than likely either a break in the cable that connects the screen the laptop, or it's worked itself loose. I would take it to a local tech guy for repair.

Apple Macintosh PowerBook G3 Start-up problem

Your mac doesn't recognize the system folder. Try to find the original boot disks that came with the machine, and see if you can mount the hard disk while booting from the CDs. If you can, I'd backup the data as soon as possible and reinstall the operating system, including a full hard drive reformat. If you can't see the hard drive from the boot cd, another option is to hold down the T key during startup to boot the mac into "target disk mode" - this will allow you to hook up the g3 to another computer as an external hard disk in order to back up the data.

It sounds like the system is corrupted. With an install disk try starting the mac up holding down the c key on the keyboard. If the screen is working properly on startup, see if the hard drive is showing up. If it is, try reinstalling the system software making sure that you do not reformat the hard drive but preserve users
