Question about Kitchen Ranges

2 Answers

After a $360 bill to replace two igniters in my 12 year-old Kenmore self-cleaning single wall oven —the broiler unit still does not work —I'm told that the safety valve will need to be replaced now (an additional $400). I'm wondering whether I should do it myself. It's located in a constricted place and it looks as if the regulator would need to be removed as well. Checking for gas leaks because of the clumsy location is also a concern.

Wow. that is way too much money to have to spend on your oven. I like Kenmores but not that much. Have you considered purchasing a new oven?

If you are not completely comfortable with checking for gas leaks and changing the regulator then I have to recommend you talk to a repair serivice. That is too dangerous to work on yourself unless you have experience.

Good luck,

CH

Unless your oven costs more than 2 000 brand new I recommend you go and buy a new one. or replace the part yourself is you wish.

KENMORE GAS STOVE OVEN , how to check if power is coming to the ignitor

The oven burner igniter
commonly known as the hot surface igniter is used in modern gas oven burners to open the gas valve and to ignite the gas. As the igniter draws electric current it will heat to a high temperature and glow, as well as cause the bi-metal in the oven safety valve to warp and open the valve releasing the gas to be ignited. This sequence normally takes about a minute. Igniters come in both flat and round styles and are very fragile. If the burner does not light then you should check the igniter first. If the igniter does not glow at all, then check for power to the circuit. This is a live voltage check and should be performed by a qualified person. If power is present then the igniter may be open circuit and can be checked for continuity with a multi-meter. If the igniter is glowing, but the burner is not lighting, the igniter may be weak and still be at fault because it requires a certain amount of current draw to open the valve. This check requires the use of an amp meter and should be performed by a qualified person. If the igniter is defective then it must be replaced.

Probably, in some models both the bake and broil come on to help it heat faster and hotter. In some units the self cleaning light will not come on until a certain temperature is attained. Are you setting the start time for right now, and the stop time for 2 to 3 hours from now?

First your broiler heating element may have gone bad and now you oven heating element may have gone bad. Using an OHM meter disconnect them and test for their value.Full scale on the meter means it is shorted. No meter movement means that it is open.Eitehr means to obtain a new element(s) and replace it/them.

My Kenmore oven wont ignite. The broiler works

The problem is your bake ignitor. The following link explains:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r401858-replacing_oven_igniter_gas_range

The bake and broil oven features each have their own separate igniters and operate independently of one another. That explains why the broiler still works. They are, however, fed from the same gas source. So...the logical conclusion would be to replace your bake igniter (the no glowing is usually a dead give-away).

Replacements can be purchased on line at searspartsdirect.com, appliancepartspros.com, pcappliancerepair.com, or repairclinic.com. Prices can vary amongst sites, so shop around for the best price. The sites I provided to you, I found, tend to offer the best service and prices.

If you have questions along the way, or require addtional service, please let me know. I hope you find this information helpful.

Broiler Works/Oven Doesn't

Jrzy, even though you can see the bake igniter glowing, that doesn't mean it's good. Igniters actually get weak (unlike a light bulb that simply burns out). It's hooked up in series to a safety valve (the valve that allows main gas into the oven) which actually reads the amps flowing through the igniter. If the igniter is weak and the amps are too low, the valve won't open up. Replace your igniter and you'll be cookin' with gas again. Tip---> before you unscrew your old igniter, put a little liquid dish soap on the threads for lubrication. This'll ensure it comes out with no problems.
