Game disc cannot be read - Nintendo Wii Console

1. Clean the Disc: Ensure that the installation disc is clean and free of smudges, scratches, or dirt. Clean it gently with a soft, lint-free cloth, wiping from the center of the disc outward.
2. Check for Compatibility: Make sure that the game disc you're trying to use is compatible with your PS2. Some older PS2 models have difficulty reading certain types of discs.
3. Check the PS2: Ensure that your PS2 console is clean and free of dust. Dust can interfere with the disc-reading mechanism. You can use compressed air to blow out any dust from the disc tray.
4. Try Another Game: To determine if the issue is specific to the game disc or your PS2, try another game disc. If other games work without issue, it might be a problem with the installation disc.
5. Memory Card: Sometimes, a corrupted memory card can cause issues. Try removing any memory cards and see if the problem persists.
6. Lens Cleaning: If none of the above steps work, you might need to clean the PS2's disc-reading laser lens. There are specialized cleaning kits available for this purpose. Follow the instructions carefully if you decide to do this.

Unable to Read the Disc / Disc Could Not Be Read Situation:

What to do:

• This message may display if the disc is ejected during play. Return to the HOME Menu before changing discs.
  
  
• If the Wii console is laying flat, verify that the system is not placed upside-down. The game disc slot should be above all three buttons and the SD Card slot.
  
  
• Verify that the disc is being inserted properly.
  
  • If the console is placed vertically, the disc label will face to the right. Note: Only Wii consoles with model number RVL-001 are intended to be placed vertically (learn more)
    
    
    
  • If the console is placed horizontally, the disc label will face upwards.

Situation Not Resolved:

• If only one Game Disc displays this error message, it will need to be replaced. Click here for Game Disc replacement options
  
  
• If the error is occurring with most or all Game Discs or all of one type of game, then this indicates a problem with the system. The console and one or two example discs will need to be sent in for repair. Click here to begin the repair process.

The most common reason for the games not reading discs is a bad drive. The following website sells the drives and does installs:

Made a video showing how I fixed this exact problem on a Wii.

If Wii gives Unreadable disc, first step you need to check is to try another disc or clean the exisitng disc. This will confirm that problem is with either Wii or Disc.
