TCP/IP problem with 100Base Hub

By Beresford - usenet poster

Customer has following hubs stacked in same order
INTEL EXPRESS 100BASE-TX EC100TX
INTEL EXPRESS 10/100 EE110TX12 WITH ETHERNET MODULE
INTEL EXPRESS 10/100 EE110TX12
INTEL EXPRESS 220T EE220TX12
Hubs 1 & 2 are connected using the ethernet module in Hub 2 with a CAT 5 patch cable to Hub 1. Hubs 2-4 are connected using rear connection ports. A 10 MB router is connected to Hub 4. All users can access router except those in Hub 1. Any ideas?
Thanks

Hello Joe,

Your setup is according to design rules. Technically, all ports on all hubs should be able to see eachother.
In order to define the nature of your problem, it would be interesting to know wether the stations on hub1 can contact anything else on the other hubs aside of the router, which they can not access. This, simply to make sure that the problem is hub related and not config related. As of now, we are looking at a number of possible explanations and fixes for your problem. Let us know and we'll help you out.
Undoubtedly, Intel support will have some more suggestions as well.

Tom,

Thanks for your quick response. Customer has 3 Novell and one NT file server attaches to hubs. All users can access all servers. Also have server HP Printservers and one Intel Printserver that all users can print to. Customer has Xerox Printer/Plotter that requires TCP/IP protocol to print and that works fine. Primary protocol is IPX/SPX.

I appriciate your help on this.

Joe:

Thank you for choosing Intel(R) Express Networking Products.

As Tom states in his response to your post, it appears that you are
following all appropriate network design rules. Therefore, lets go
over some basics (for purposes of simplicity and clarity, let's label
the hubs A, B, C, and D for the EC100TX, EE110TX12 with Ethernet
Module, EE110TX12, EE220TX12 respectively):

*When you state that "All users can access router except those in Hub
1 (hub A)", what exactly do you mean - they cannot ping the router,
they cannot access the far side of the router, etc.? Please be as
detailed and precise as possible.

*How long is the cable connecting hubs A and B? What happens if you
bring those hubs together and connect with a very short, known good
category 5 patch cable?

*At what speed are hubs B and C running - 10Mbps or 100Mbps?

*What happens when you take a device off of hub A and connect it into
hub D - can that device now see the router?

*Please confirm that the devices on hub A can successfully communicate
with all other devices on hubs B, C, and D other than the router.

*Please provide more information on the router - what brand/model, to
what is it connected, what protocols is it routing, etc? Please be as
detailed and precise as possible.

*Do you have a management module in any of your hubs? If yes, please
report any errors that Intel Device View is showing.

*Please describe the status of the LEDs on the various hubs.

Thank you.
