This is my boyfriend's son's laptop. they are both computer challenged.
this thing moves at a snails pace. I just asked my boyfriend to hit control/alt/del as the computer was just starting and it listed 70 programs trying to start. can I clean the registry? how do I know which startup items are totally necessary?

Re: how to change startup
Its very very easy. down load ccleaner for free its a software which allows you to clean up all files which are not necessary, cleans registry and you can choose startup items which ones to start and make booting process faster

Two things that may be wrong here. You may have a power supply problem which requires a replacement and the other is a keyboard problem. Sometimes when the keyboard is defective, certain keys continue to be depressed and therefore forces the computer to process those commands. Therefore, slows down the computer.
ok to rare but try to make a two partitions , when you install xp shows an partition option , make one partitions to 40gb and the other 120 gb and try , yo can do this form windows but be sure that you have all your documents save like backup , many programs on line you can find on line for do this , just search in google, a program that i recomend is partition magic easy to use
The first thing I'd try to do is see what programs are running at startup. To do this Click on Start--> Run -->type "msconfig" without the quotes.
Click on the Startup Tab and view all the programs that are running at startup. As for deselecting which programs run at startup you can directly ask me which ones you can disable. For the most part all instant messengers and most program files can be disabled.
If your son used the edata security and used both passwords. you can either ask him for password or change the boot secuence to boot to restore disk and restore back to default..which defaults to NO PASSWORD set.
