Re: CD player on boombox
The laser is dead or damaged. Try swabbing the laser with rubbing alcohol on a Q-Tip, then IMMEDIATELY blowing dry with canned air. If this fails, the laser is dead. If it is a Sony KSS-2xx series laser (try to peek in the laser slot to see the decal on it) you can get replacements online. If not, it's junk.

HelloCheck the CD spins inside it, when we close the lid. if not, check the lid. There is a small swelling like formation at its edge that will get into the CD player, when we close it. This will hit on a micro switch inside the set, which in turn send a CD in signal to its system control IC. If this signal does not reach the main system control IC, it won't sense that CD is in. If this switching process is OK, when you close the CD lid, make sure that the CD mechanism has the trouble, and need service. OK.
Try cleaning the lens using a CD Cleaner you can buy from alot of shops.
If it fails use it a few times then if it still wont play , or the disk failed to spin all together then you probably have a faulty spindle motor.
the laser lens needs cleaned most likely, you can purchace a cleaning disk, or take the unit apart and used a eyeglasses cloth and very gently wipe the lens clean. the lens will be very small and near the motor that spins the cd. when wiping it off, wipe in one direction only. if that doesnt work then the laser has become weak or has quit working
buy a cleaning disk, or get a micro fiber cloth, and take the stereo apart and find the laser lens, near the motor that spins the cd, it will be pretty small, gently wipe it clean in one direction, if that doesnt work, the laser has quit working.
?: Does the cd spins? If it does the optical eye that reads the cd could be dirty. Clean the eye with cd lens cleaner. If the cd is not spinning the motor could be bad. Also some cd players can't read certain disks because of the density of the disk. Make sure you read the manual to see what cds are compatible with your boombox. I hope these solutions were helpful.
I had this problem on my Panasonic since it has a mechanised front tray loader. There are a couple of things you can do: clean the CD with toothpaste and dry the CD with a fabric cloth - not paper as this will scratch the CD.
Vacuum out the CD player by using a crevice tool and carefully insert into the mouth of the CD player to get rid of any dust.
If the CD has been burnt from a computer, it may not recognise on the Sony unit even if it states it can play CD's from PC/Mac. Usually after a CD has been burnt its best to play it on your computer before transferring to the stereo unit of your choice.
Usually the clicking noise means that the music is trying to get through but something is stopping it.
