"Live View", where you can see and compose your picture on the LCD, was not available on any digital SLR before 2007 (the Rebel XTi came out in late 2006). So you need to compose your picture using the optical viewfinder, take your picture, and the picture shows up on the LCD after you've taken it.

But it's still faster than having to wait until the film is developed. :-)

EOS400D digital, I cant see the subject through the lens, I have taken the lens cover off

Hi Carol,
There are two things that I can think of which will prevent you from sighting through the view finder.
1. When your camera is switched on for live-view shooting mode or vice versa. That is, you can only see the subject in the LCD screen or through the view finder one at a time.
2. If you are using the LCD screen to frame your subject and you encounter this problem, it is most likely caused by the settings of the camera. Try increasing the ISO to around 400 or above, reduce the shutter speed to anything below 1/20 and the aperture to around F:5.6 or less (that depends on your lens.
Hope you resolve the problem by now but if you haven't try those tips.
Regards.

When tKing a picture...should my subject appear in the view screen window...the big screen? Or do you have to look in tiny scdeen to see subject when taking a picture?

Use the largest screen to get a better idea of the focus. Smaller screens lack the resolution to show a slightly unfocused shot - but it will be noticeable later when printed or viewed on a large screen. Of course, these screens eat battery life - so you can use your optical viewfinder whenever possible.

Why does d60 turns itself off?

To conserve battery power. Actually, it's only turning the LCD screen off, which is a huge battery hog. If you're out in the field waiting hours for that ___ to come by, you don't want you battery dead from running the LCD screen all the time, but you might miss the shot if you have to take the time to turn the camera on. So the camera "naps" until your subject is in view.

Cannot see subject through screen or review

The Display button toggles the information shown on the LCD (or turns it off entirely). Make sure you haven't inadvertently pressed it and turned off the display. It works as follows:

  • Press once for Normal view in LCD viewfinder
  • Press twice to turn on Rule of Thirds grid lines
  • Press three times to turn off LCD display
  • Press and hold 1 sec. to decrease/increase LCD brightness

We have a new Cannon XS and haven't been able to view subjects through the LCD viewfinder. Subjects are only viewed through the eyepiece. How can we program the camera to use the LCD screen for viewing...

On my Canon Ixus, there is a button on the back by the LCD panel marked "DISP.". This turns the LCD on and off. The reason for this function is to save battery power.

Pic screen is fuzzy tried cleaning the lense still not clear

This may help you, try using the Preview feature on the LCD screen.
The LCD screen Preview feature was not used to take a picture in Close-Up mode. Always use the Preview feature in Close-Up mode to confirm focus and to frame the subject properly. If the Preview feature is not used, the LCD will not display an accurate view of the subject.

Can not see my subject through the lcd screen

I believe that the "LIVE VIEW" shooting can only be done in Auto mode. Once in Auto mode, try pressing the SET button located to the right of the LCD screen. Once depressed, you should hear a quick click noise and see what the lens is seeing on the LCD screen. Click on it again and it should revert back to "viewfinder" mode.

Good luck!

LCD screen

Correct, Since the camera is an DSLR, there is no way for the sensor to have a 'preview' of your subject. The mirror reflects the image and the shutter is closed, covering the CCD sensor until you take a picture.

Canon SD400 LCD screen does not work

The symptoms you describe sound like a CCD failure. Canon is fixing this for for free for certain cameras, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of the camera's warranty status. However, the SD400 is not on the advisory list (although the S400 is). Please check the following two links for more info:
