This really sounds like it is a simple top threading problem. Please check your threading path at the take-up lever #3 of the 4 steps. If the thread comes out of the take-up lever or it was missed during threading, the machine does not receive any top tension. No top tension means that the machine is being flooded with thread and wrapping around the shuttle hook.... jamming up.
If your machine is currently threaded, leave it threaded follow the thread from the spool through the first thread guide at #1 straight down to #2 and up to #3 (make sure that the thread is through the take-up lever (silver hook) at #3 from three you will bring the thread straight down to the thread guide that is to the left of the needle. Thread the needle from front to back.
I know this sounds too simplistic but it happens to even professional sewers.
Hope this resolves the issue you are having, feel free to contact me any time.
Thank you
Bonnie

I have a Kenmore model 1690. The needle when it goes down does not hit the hole in the foot plate. It comes down too far to the left of the opening, making it impossible to use the machine. I have...

This machine, when you have it on straight stitch, will sew with the needle to the left. If it's hitting the pressure foot, you may have the wrong pressure foot on the machine. If it's hitting the needle plate when you have the pressure foot removed, it's possible you have set for zig zag and you have a straight stitch needle plate on the machine. I believe this machine came with 2 needle plates. One for straight stitch, and another for zig zag.

Thread is botching up on the bottom. kenmore 17828490

Check the top tension dial is set to the middle setting of 5 or so and also check if the thread is actually between the tension discs and under tension. Lower the pressure foot, then pull the top thread just before it gets to the needle, it should be very firm. If not, then raise the pressure foot, pull the thread out and rethread the top thread, pulling it firmly between the tension discs.

Loops on the underside is usually top tension issues and visa versa if you get loops on top, check the bobbin thread tension.

It is threaded. but it goes through motion but there is no sewing.

Make sure that your bobbin is full and that you have picked up the bottom thread. Before you start sewing you should have two threads lying on the needle plate. To catch the bobbin thread, hold the needle thread and turn the machine by the hand wheel. The needle will bring the bobbin thread up with it. Pull the threads out about 4 inches and then you are ready to sew.

My kenmore sewing machine model 385.18221 is not really sewing. It seems like it is for a couple of stitches then the fabric goes down into the machine, threads r hung up in the bottom and when u get the...

Hello,
Here are several solutions to try.

- Re-thread your machine. It may be threaded incorrectly (backwards).

- Raise your feed dogs if your machine has this feature.

- When you start to sew a seam, hold the upper and bobbin thread tails. Hold them back and out of the way as you sew your first couple of stitches. This will keep them from getting caught in your machine.

- Reinsert your needle and make sure it goes all the way into the holder and that it’s positioned correctly – usually with the flat side away from the bobbin, but consult your machine’s manual to be sure.

- Change your needle, it may be blunt, bent, or otherwise damaged.

- Your fabric may require a different needle. Generally, heavier fabrics require larger needles and thinner fabrics, smaller needles. You may also need a larger needle if you’re sewing through many layers of fabric. And make sure to use a ballpoint needle for knit fabrics and a sharp needle for woven (or a universal needle for either). Make sure your needle is appropriate for the type of thread you’re using.

- Adjust the pressure of your pressure foot. It may be too light for your fabric.

- Change your thread. If your upper thread and bobbin threads are different types, try using the same thread for both. And use a good quality, brand name thread.

- Adjust your thread tension, It may be too tight or too loose.

- Change your needle plate. Try switching to a needle plate with a smaller hole (a straight stitch needle plate).

Important Note: After changing your needle plate, check to make sure your needle aligns perfectly with the smaller hole before starting to sew. A misaligned needle could hit the plate and break, which could be dangerous. And make sure to change your needle plate back for zigzag and other wide stitches.

I hope these solutions help you.

stuck the whole machine the needle did not move .needle and wheel handle both are stuck

1 Answer

Needle won't move; something stuck/dislodged

Can you remove the bobbin? Sometimes when thread gets bunched up under the lower plate it will force the bobbin out of position. Try taking it out and cleaning any loose thread and lint from the area. Put a couple of drops of oil on the outside of the bobbin case and re-insert it. Make sure you lower the needle and pull the bobbin thread through to the top and back behind the needle before beginning to sew again.
Hope this works!
