Make sure your backup server is not preventing the media being removed

try rebooting your server, if the tape then can be ejected it is probably your backup software.

If the tape wont eject even after both server and drive have been rebooted it is probably faulty and needs to go for warranty exchange with HP

Tape media eject

You might be using the wrong type of media in the drive. Make sure you are only using DDS4 or DDS3 tapes in the drive.

If you are using the right media type then try a cleaning tape and then a brand new data tape.

If you are still having issues the go to www.tape-drive-repair.com who have these in stock at very low prices. Since these units are so inexpensive now it seem false economy to waste too much time fixing them.

Hi, Guru

Hi,

Tape getting struck in media library may not be because of the backup application. Move the media out manually. While filling in the media slots make sure you leave a couple of slots free to avoid the srtuck scenerios..

Please come back and rate my solution if it turns to be helpful for you.
Thnx :)

Certance DAT 72 tape drive stopped communicating with PC

We have had the same problems with HP drives and Veritas. In our case it was not the drive per se. While I am assuming that based on the date of your post that you have moved to another solution, however, I will provide for you what we did.

First shut all down, disconnect the tape drive from the scsi cable, then restart. Go into computer management and turn all your backup exec services from auto to manual. Now go to devices and do a rescan. Once this is done and you see no tape drive whatsoever in the devices shut down the server. Reconnect the scsi cable to the drive and restart.

Go back into computer management, back to devices and rescan for hardware changes. Do you see it? If so, good! Sometimes a re-seating of connectors will do that. On the other hand, it could also be a tape driver from Veritas that just doesn't work (my case), take the original driver cd that came with the unit and start that loading up. Can you see it now? Can you use windows backup to access the tape drive? Now go into services and start the services individually. Go into backup exec and see if you can read your tape. Go back to services and reset all services back to auto. If you ever have to reinstall/upgrade backup exec, think twice about using their drivers.

DDS-5 not compatible with windows 2008

I am pretty sure that the driver should be compatible with win08.

If you are using backup exec then try switching to use symantec drivers for your tape drive (setting withing BUEX)

If it is just the tape that cant be read or identified and was backed up using windows backup then try restoring the backup on a 2003 server and then copying the data across the network.
