Question about Dryers

White Westinghouse electric clothes dryer squeeks

It makes a squeeking noise, which was louder upon start up and would then go away during the drying cycle. Now it is getting worse, lasting through the cycle and getting louder. My wife found your site and noted that the drum bearing might need lubrication. Should I try that, or do I need to replace the bearing at this point? Special grease or what type? How do I access the bearing? Through the rear of the machine, remove the back panel? Thanks!

Fixed it myself after consulting www.applianceaid.com where I found lots of info, dissassembly diagrams, specific info on parts, costs, etc. Great web site, highly recommended. The advice was that the bearing is probalby gone if it is really squeeking, which ours was. Sure enough, took it apart and the nylon bearing cup was shot. Bought a bearing kit at the local appliance store, Dave's Appliance in Winthrop Maine, and had if fixed in under an hour of reassembly. Got some great advice from Dave's Appliance staff as well, tips on installation of the parts, how much grease to apply, etc. Fixya.com has been less than helpful, seemingly only interested in selling me advice since none was posted for free. Try the site above, www.applianceaid.com for some real assistance! Plus my local store, Dave's Appliance, was right there with parts in stock at a competetive price, and I had it that same day!

    Jim.

there is a front glide assembly, depending on model will have 3 teflon/plastic glides attached t o the felt, this may be your grinding and gap issue

SOURCE: Constant squeeking while drying clothes

It's most likely the roller bushigs/axles which need lubricating -- they've probably not failed yet, but will if ignored.

They squeak more when clothes are wet because of more weight.

I'd also lubricate the motor while your in there.

Dryer squeeking while tumbling & leaves black smudge on clothes

it sounds like a drum support roller is going bad or the belt idler pulley. i think maytag has a kick panel on the bottom that can be removed. look inside with a flashlight and you may be able to see something. if not, you may have to take the drum out to get a really good look. make a note and study how the drive belt serpentines around the motor, pulley, and drum so you can get it back together.

thanks for the question. If your dryer squeeks just a short squeek just as you start it thats not a big problem If the noise is there all the way through the cycle it could be the drum rollers locatedat back wall of dryer ,the drum rides on 2 of these they could be worn if its a short sqeek could be a slightly worn belt . thanks for the question The appliance doc
