If you lift the scanner and then carfully remove the cover that is on the same side as the ink cartridges the box should bein the back and you can remove it and clean it and let it dry for a while then reinstall it. if you need more help just do a live chat request for ME and i will help you

Can you please tell me where I can purchase a new ink absorber and what the correct part number is? Brother do not seem to sell them, presumably because they want to send out a technician and charge you lots of money!

You need to have the box replaced, i'd suggest by an engineer and they should know how to reset the counter on the main board so that the fault goes away.
I could find out the code to do it but the machine will prob need the box replaced because its basically waste ink and if that box gets to full then the ink will start leaking out the bottom and making a right mess of what ever its sitting on.
Could also transfer onto the back of your prints so i'd just get it changed.
Good Luck

Ink absorber full brothers

Sir/Madam

The ink absorber box or flushing box is full. These components are periodic maintenance items that may require replacement after a period of time to ensure optimum performance from your Brother machine. The need to replace these items and the time period before replacement is dependent on the number of purges and flushes required to clean the ink system. These boxes acquire amounts of ink during the different purging and flushing operations. The number of times a machine purges and flushes for cleaning varies depending on different situations. For example, frequently powering the machine on and off will cause numerous cleaning cycles since the machine automatically cleans upon power up. The use of non-Brother ink may cause frequent cleanings because non-Brother ink could cause poor print quality which is resolved by cleaning. The more cleaning the machine requires the faster these boxes will fill up.

The ink absorber box or flushing box will need to be replaced.

Other reasons for cleaning are:
  1. Machine automatically cleans after clearing a printer jam.
  2. Machine automatically cleans after sitting idle for more than 45 days (infrequent use).

Ink absorber pad is full

You need to replace the waste ink absorber and then reset the counter. These can be obtained from some suppliers of ink and spares etc, otherwise you will need to contact Brother in your country or take the unit to a service engineer.

Generally when these errors occur the waste ink absorber needs replacing, if not your images will start to degrade in quality and you will start to see ink splays / splodges appearing as well as random spots and ink patches. In the mean time press RESUME /CANCEL to continue printing.

Brother mfc MFC-5440CN magenta issues

If you have used generic ink the head is clogged and cant be cleaned anymore.

Last chance is to use original brother ink which has cleaning fluids within the ink. Run the cleaning procedure twice and simply print 10 PAGES afterwards. Wait A DAY AND TRY TO PRINT IN MAG AGAIN:

If there will be no mag. the ph is definitley clogged and needs replacement.

Error 46 Unable to Init.

No need for part necessarily
SkipperOz solution pasted below

MFC-5440CN saved from the tip!
"Unable to Clean" message - found TrickyDicky's sltn 4 for various printers.
Went into maint mode as per sltn 4 - verified error 46.
"The user can establish the internal Machine Error Code as follows: pull the mains cable out of the machine (power off), hold down the Menu/Set key, re-insert the mains cable into the machine (power on). The internal Machine Error Code will be displayed."

Keyed in 80 - stepped through the items with "down" key and located Purge Counter.
"Press the 2, 7, 8, and 3 keys in this order to reset the purge count to zero
Press the Stop/Exit key to return to the initial stage of the maintenance mode.
Press the 9 key twice to return to the standby state."

This worked brilliantly - no need to tamper with any parts of the printer. Purge Counter reset did it all. Fully functional printer.

Thanks TrickyDicky for info on verifying the error code and purge reset
