I would say you to send it to repair but that cost money and you have nothing to loose actually so first option is to try it yourself. You need a straight long tweezers like the second from top in the picture.

And a flashlight to iluminate the internal slot1 where the pins are. Then check which ones are bent and try to repair them carefully with the tweezer being more careful not to broke any.

In case you find any broken pin then you have to send it to repair at nintendo or to another videogame repair shop as it need desolder the whole broken slot1 and replace it with a good one no matter if new or used as long as it is good.

Good Luck...

Last time I had bent pins I must desolder the bent pins and get them out of the slot from behind, then repair and rectify the bad ones without damaging more, and put them again in the slot taking care the pins get right in place because the front part of the pin, where it get bent upside to make contact with the cartridge, must fit in a hole and still get hight enough to make good contact...
Not an easy work to do though I saved myself to desolder the whole slot and put a new good one because no pin was broken, just bent.

You can buy replacement Slot 1 ports for a few £/$'s from various places online (I get mine from DealExtreme) and there may well be video guides to aid you on YouTube. Basically, if you're handy with a soldering iron, it's fiddly, but not too difficult once you've got the old port off and it'd accessable once you have removed the back from the DS (tri-wing driver needed)..... The port is soldered to the board at each corner so use some de-soldering braid and gently lever each corner while heating with the iron (don't worry too much if you lift some of the circuit board up) and snap all the pins from the old port by folding it back/forward on itself then use the iron to remove the pins from the solder individually.

Sorry it's so long winded lol.

Since using mariokart my ds keeps freezing and i havet o turn it off and restart-which means i lose what ive just done. it happens to the other ds as well but only since we put mariokart in it. my son...

My thought on this matter is that the mariokart game cartridge is bending the pins in the game socket (slot1) i maybe wrong but original cartridges have little plastic groves between the copper tracks, if one of these has been damaged some how ie: my son bit the end of his lol!, it could bend one or more of the pins inside the socket and therfore causing your problem, and a new socket is needed. Cheaper than buying a new ds, but requires good soldering skills.
As for the virus theory you never know, but i havent herd of one affecting the ds ....Yet!!

How do you remove and open the ds card slot?

You push down your DS card to get it out ,and to put it in you take the card you want and push it in slot 1.

Nintendo DS not reading games

Some pins were bent in my son's DS. I used a mini LED light and an open paper clip as a pick to bend them back into line.
I then got an Emory board (nail file) and wet the tip in alcohol, the board is the right thickness to just reach the copper pins. I went in and out gently as I worked my way across the lot and kept wetting the file with alcohol. All the games worked like it was new. be sure to do this upside down so the alcohol drips out the slot along with the filings. good compressed air blow after you are done to get all the strays out of there.

The pinds are copper and they do oxidize and the games left in gets moisture trapped between the game and the pin causing some corrosion. Maybe diddimilar metals by alloy but wither way this fix works ! : )

Nintendo ds wont read ds games

did you try to clean the pins (carfully) this sometimes works for me, their is no one i know of that sells the slot reader, as for replacing it you will need to desolder and resolder the 18 pins plus the 4 that hold the shell down

Nintendo ds lite won't read card

had this problem, i looked into where the game goes and one of the little metal teeth was bent, so i took a long toothpick and gently pushed it back over now it works fine. Be careful that you dont break it off though.

DS Cartridge slot, broken pins

no. unless you know how to disassemble it and know how to do some soldering.

if you can think you can do it.
open it, check for wires with same diameter of original ones and remake the wiring.
not impossible, but a hard task to do.
