You might have a locking caliper. Have you checked that?

  • newbirdy455 Mar 05, 2011

You are very welcome. Sometimes, they don't retract, therfore, they keep the pads locked to the rotor. Hope this helps.

86 honda wagovan right rear wheel locked up

Not sure about the advice above...If your experiencing a rear wheel locking up, I've seen where the emergency brake cable is not releasing and is stuck. Best bet is to have someone operate the E-brake while you watch the cable underneath the car on the right side. If you don't see the cable retracting, clamp a pair of vice grips tightly onto the cable (away from where it could retract into the sheath) and tap the vice grips "away" from the wheel. This will "persuade" the cable to retract, therefore releasing the emergency brake. If that's it, don't use the emergency brake until you either lube it real well or replace it. Good luck!

Check the brake light function. If the lights work then replace the shift lock solenoid. If they don't work then replace the brake light switch and retry.

Rear drum brake locked on a 1998 volkswagen jetta

You could try momentarily releasing the bleed nipple. If that frees the brake it is a hydraulic problem causing it to bind.

You might have assembled wrong and should take a look at the repair manual or compare with the other side but most commonly such problems are caused by the handbrake cable or levers not fully returning or being adjusted to tightly.

When working on a drum brake the cable adjustment should be fully released before finally fitting the drum and then the brake pedal should be pressed hard several times and then the cable readjusted and the brake checked for correct operation before fitting the wheel. Any problems then are obvious before it goes anywhere near the road.

Why when i apply my brakes the back passenger wheel locks up and when i go in reverse it unlocks

Have the drum Turned, Replace the Shoes on both sides and readjust them for proper activation. When you replace the shoes you will have to turn the adjuster down so the new shoes will fit in the drum and then you will need to go through the adjusting process of backing and hitting the brakes to activate the adjusters till they catch. Doing this manually I used to tighten them to contact then back the adjuster off 4 to 5 clicks on each side. Another thing you want to check is the caliper on the side that is locking and the Line for a clog on the side that isn't locking. You can check the line by making sure you bleed the line to remove air which will stop the brake from working correctly. Make sure none of the flexible lines are kinked in the system.

Have a 1996 F150 and replaced the master cylinder and booster. Now the rear brakes lock up everytime the car is turned off. Any ideas?

I would readjust the emergency brake cable and the rear brake adjusters. The adjustments seem to have changed since improving the pressure back there.

Our car has been sitting parked for the past 8 months, today we tried to move it and the back brakes are locked, and the back wheels will not move? What could be the cause of this?

The bracke drum / Hand brake cable is stuck . Try to hammer the rear wheel centre and if the brake drum is stuck it wiill be released .
Also the cable of hand brake is stuck . try puling the hand lever of the hand brake up and down many times this may free it .

Right back brake locks up 1993 pontiac grand am

Make sure there is nothing leaking onto the brake shoes. Also, make sure that the emergency brake is dis-engaging and the cable isn't hanging up. If the original wheel cylinder had been leaking, the brakes may need to be replaced if they were contaminated. Also check that the drum itself is round. If not, the shoes will lock the wheel when they are on the high spot. An easy "backyard" way of checking the drum is to move it to the other side. If the problem moves to that side the drum is out of round.

1993 ford f-150 rear drum brakes locking up

You need to replace the brake shoe springs they are weak and allowing the brakes to catch and pull out as the wheel spins like a CD or record player this cause the shoes to lock into the drum and forces them to lock up. A brake spring kit cost $8.00 for a set and it does both sides, it also has the nail and nail springs that hold the shoes against the drum. Check to be sure you don't have micro cracks in the shoes caused by the brakes locking up and heating up. Also does it have rivited shoes or glued on shoes, please rate if this was helpful.

Right rear wheel has rubbing and grinding noises, as on cast iron

My advise is to adjust the rear brakes. The drum should not move in a side to side fashion. adjusting the brakes will also more than likely take care of that anti lock brake light also. adjust the brakes up to where the rear wheel will spin but you should be able to hear the brake show dragging slightly on the drum.
