I own a emachine w3622 and changed the hard drive. The computer reconizes the new hard drive but when I go to use the operating system disk that came with my computer says disk boot failure. Not only that...

The disk that came with your system is a recovery disk only. You will need a full installation disk from your local retailer or you can match the OS from your old HDD and use the serial key on the side/back of your machine. If you just wanted more space, install both drives and set the original one as the boot drive. the new drive, if properly installed (refer to your hdd instructions and jumper settings) you will see the second drive under "My Computer" as additional storage

Have replaced computer. Motherboard dead on old one. Is there any practical way I can get pictures and such from old computer. It will not power up. Thanks

You should be able to tak the hard drive out of the old one and put it in the new one as a secondary drive. There is a good chance, though, that the drive won't fit. If it doesn't, you'll need something like this.

I have an older dell computer and teh hard disk is

No the O.S. will not still be n the system. You will have to reload it. If you have the original disk, that is. Also take ALL of the pertinent info. you want and load to a disk. Such as, pictures, documents, all downloads you have put in the system including the setup. If you don't know how, email me and I can help. Otherwise, insert a blank C.D.,wait for auto play, select the programs, and or pic. or doc.s. right click and choose send to unless you have the option of "burn to" then use that one. I hoped this helps.

How do you transfer hard drive from old comp. to new?

For just the data, get an ide to usb converter and connect it to the new computer, and just drag and drop.
You cant move an entire hard drive to a new computer because of driver issues, but you can use windows built in files and settings transfer utility.

Sometimes it is easier to install a new hard disk and reinstall Windows.
Then either connect the old hard drive as a slave drive (don't forget to set the jumper on this drive as a slave). The other way is to connect the old hard drive to a USB hard drive adapter and connect it to a working computer's USB port. this computer will see it as an external hard drive (provided the hard drive is still functioning).
Either way you can download and backup your files.

Want to install new WD hard drive into my old computer

You say you see data on disks on your existing system, yet they appear blank when trying to install? Please try to dig a little deeper and find your setup file. Data wouldn't disappear unless your running NTFS now and the disks are FAT.

You can't transfer the operating system. You have to reinstall it on the new hard drive. Most of the time the disks that come with a computer are just restore disks. Without the restore partition that comes on the hard drive that came with the computer, those disks are usually useless. Or if you want, you can keep both hard drives, and just setup the jumper settings on the hard drives so that the old hard drive is the primary, and the new one is the secondary. Then you will still have the operating system and you will use the new hard drive for storage.

The most likely cause of this, is that the new hard drive is not the same as the orginal. Restore media is setup to install only on OEM. Orginal Equipement. If the new hard drive is larger or smaller then the orginal it will not properly load.

The easiest solution to this is if the new hard drive is larger, use a disk setup utility and create a partition the same size as the old drive.

If your drive was retail the software to do this will have been in the box. If you purchased an oem drive you can download the drive setup tools from the manufacturers site.

The drive setup utility is easy to use. Boot to it and choose setup drive. When selected it then procedes to the screen where you will need to set the size of the partition. 1024MB is 1 GB. This will help you detemine the size of the partition you need to set.

Good luck
