Absolutely! The only thing needed for use as a fax is being plugged into a live phone line. These are specifically designed for just that purpose so the computer does not have to be left running while fax machine and copier remain on in the office. Mainly so the office can shut down the computer when not needed to save power when not needed. Ex. to receive faxes at night when the office is closed. You only need to leave the printer on and it will function as a stand alone copier fax machine. The computer is only required when you want to print a document or scan a page and save it. I hope this fully answers your question.
If you have others feel free to ask.

Burned cds not playing on other cd players

If the CD will play in your computer (and others) but not on stand alone players, the problem is most likely that you are not "closing" your CD's.
If you use a wizard to create your CD's it should ask you if you want to close the CD so that no more information can be written to it. If you create your CD's without using a wizard then there should be an option somewhere that will allow you to do this... depending on which software you use.
It is also possible that the format (music) is not compatible with your stand alone player.

Hi Brenda,

Your All In One wants a phone line hooked directly to it. It won't fax without a "POTS" line directly hooked to it. POTS stands for "Plain Old Telephone Service" which is the line with good old dial tone on it.

Have downloaded new lexmark x4270 driver for Vista. Still can't print.

un-install the old drivers and software, then reboot the computer with the USB cable to the printer pulled out and reinstall the lexmark software, it will tell you if you need to put the cable in!

here is the authentic lexmark sofware just in case:

Smita,

You didn't mention what Operating system you had, Since you mentioned Microsoft I'm assuming it's one of the varieties of windows.

In my honest oppinion I believe your problem lies with using the integrated fax utilities "Built into" Windows. Microsofts Fax utilities never were as good as some of the Standalone software out there.

My best advice if you need to use your PC for faxing is to get one of the stand alone fax programs out there. My recommendation would be WinFax Pro. But you are welcome to shop around and Find one that fits your needs both in cost and functionality.

Good Luck and Take care

Printer does not work

If you mean that the computer is not detecting the printer, there are a couple of things to try first. I would first just shut off the computer than plug the printer in, and start the computer to see if it would auto detect. This would soley depend if the drivers are already installed on you operating system. I am running XP Home, and I did not see the printer.

Second step would be to download and install the driver. Here it is.

Just scroll down to your operating system download, scan with anti-virus and install. Make sure that the printer is hooked up when you install the software in case it tries to auto detect. If this doesn't work it could be that your ports are not working for some reason. Then the next step would be to look at the hardware manager set up.

it should work as long as you have the right drivers for the operating system you are running. try downloading new drivers for it on the net.
drivers should be located here under drivers and downloads

Trying to hook-up a lexmark 5000 series printer/scan/fax to a ge cordless built in answering machine telephone through the computer

No.  Unless you're running Asterisk, which you can go read up on, you want to use a line splitter to have the FAX and phone both on the same line.

Installed Lexmark 1240 but when I try to set up fax it says no modem found

Yes, This assumes that you are hooking the printer upto a 56k/Fax modem on the Computer, Which the Printer already has itself, What you will want to do, Is hook a Phone line upto the the Printer in the appropriate slot, and dont worry about setting the Fax feature up on your Computer, Just Worry about the Scanner, printer. For the Fax Feature, Dial the number on the Printer and It should work without Ever touching the Computer
