I have the same problem in my freezer. Water is freezing in the top. I opened the back panel and found a half inch hole with a white plug in it, It looks like it was there on purpose. There is a hose that goes down to a tray at the bottom of the fridge.

the model number is et8mhkxmqo. the plug is about 1/4 inch below the surface.
I did not want to try and pull it out, in case it was suppose to be there, I cant think
of any reason it should be there can you?

On fridges with cool wall technology, the function of the hole is to allow water which condenses on the back of the fridge to drain into the tray at the back of the fridge (on the outside) where it evaporates. It seems like this is the arrangement that you have.

water cant travel through the hole because it has a plug in it, not a clog from debris.

If the plug is removed, can water drain into the tray?
Which model of fridge/freezer do you have? It might be possible to get an answer from Whirlpool about this issue.

I cant find any reference to this particular model on the Whirlpool website, however have a look at these FAQs concerning defrosting: ( See "Answers others found helpful")

Leaks water inside from the ports or vents under freezer but in fridge

Your problem more than likely is a plugged defrost line in the freezer...The freezer goes through periodic defrost cyles to keep the coils from freezing up. The water catches in a trough pan in the freezer and flows through a drain hole to the bottom of the fridge where it evaporates. This drain hole perodically freezes up and the water accomulates under the freezer bottom until the water level reaches your vent ports to the fridge section. Open your freezer and on the bottom floor of your freezer you should see two screws near the front on either side. Remove them and then take out the bottom tray....this will expose the drain hole near the rear of the freezer compartment. You will more than likely have to remove ice under the tray in order to see the drain hole. Remove the lower back panel on the back of the refrigerator and you should be able to see the drain line coming from the freezer. Unplug the refrigerator before you begin work. It will take a little while for the drain line to thaw to allow liquid to flow to the bottom. I find a hair dryer pretty handy in speeding up the process. To verify you have unplugged the drain line you should be able to pour hot water in the drain hole in the freezer and see it come out at the rear of the fridge in tube line just above a little catch pan

Our defrost drain in our Whirlpool top freezer continues to freeze over and plug up. We use a steamer and open in completely, where water and air go all the way to the bottom drain pan. A week later it...

put a heater probe into the drain hole part number WR51X10052

stick it into the drain hole to see how far it will go without hitting anything, then rap the other end around the heater, when the heater comes on to defrost the fridge the metal heats up and stops the drain from freezing, also after you steam it and this is what i use it's the best way to do this, pour hot water down the drain and make sure it goes down and out,if you remove the back bottom panel check the bottom of the drain hose sometimes dust gets in the bottom of the hose where it bends or it's like a trap on bottom of hose, just check it to make sure it's clear,if it is and you put the heater probe in you should be all set,you can make a probe out of copper wire that's in the middle of regular house wire if you have any, just remove like 6 inches of the copper stick it into the drain hole and rap the other end around the heater will do the same thing, hope this helps you out.

Water is collecting in bottom of refrigerator

if the freezer is on top and water is under the bottom draws you have a plugged drain in the freezer.remove everything out of the freezer, shut down the machine or unplug it,remove the back inside wall of the freezer, with a hair dryer melt out all the ice.you'll see a drain hole under the evap coil, you have to blow that out,i use a steamer, you can try a turkey baster or something like that so you can blow out the line, when you think you have it cleared out, pour a half cup of hot water down the hole,if it goes down then it's clear,if not you have to blow it again until the water goes down, you can get a piece of copper wire like a ground wire from an electrical wire, slide it into the hole around 4 or 6 inches and cut it long enough so you can wrap it around the heater, when the heater comes on the copper will heat up keeping the drain from freezing up again.let me know how you make out

I have a whirlpool sided by side refrigerator purchased in 2001, I have been hearing a sizzling sound in the bottom of freezer, I opened the door last night and saw the hot coils and water dripping on...

Hi,

The problem here is that the defrost drain hose is clogged.

It is a fairly simple solution if you have a little time and patience. You will need a Phillip's screwdriver, a few bath towels, some hot water and a turkey baster.

- First turn the refrigerator off or unplug the unit.

- Open the freezer and remove all the food and shelves, you will need to use the screwdriver and take the rails off of the side walls, as you take them off line them up on the floor so you remember which ones go in which order

- Take the screws out of the back panel, the panel starts near the bottom of the freezer and comes up about 3 feet ( 1 meter ).

- Once the few screws are removed remove the light bulb is there is one. it may be hot so be careful.

- Now pull out about an inch on the top of this panel you just took the screws out of. Slide the panel upward about 2 or 3 inches. It may be a bit hard and bend but that is alright

- With it lifted you will see a small pan in the bottom of the freezer, it will most likely be filled with ice.

- Use the hot water to melt the ice and towels to clean up the mess.

DO NOT USE ANYTHING SHARP OR "CHISEL". You can damage the coils, use heat and hot water only, if you use a blow dryer or heat be careful not to heat up the side walls as they will melt.

- Once the ice is clear you will see a hole in the bottom pan about the size of a dime. Use the turkey baster and flush hot water in the hole until it flows again.

- While you are doing all this keep towels around the perimeter of the refrigerator to soak up any water that flows out the bottom, leave the towels there for a day or so to make sure you get it all up, a little leak for a few hours after the repair would be normal

- Once the drain tube is clear, you can put it back together and turn it back on

- The red coil and sizzling noise are normal. Every 8 - 10 hours your refrigerator goes into a defrost cycle to remove excess frost. The water from this heat normally goes down your drain into a pan under the frig and evaporates.

Water leaking onto top shelve of fridge

A steamer is what I use but you may not have that tool. VERY hot water can be poured into the cavity/drain hole over and over till it freely flows out the bottom to the tray or you can just turn off the refer for a day with the door open to let it thaw. To prevent freeze plug again you can hang a small copper wire on the heat element that dangles down into the first inch of the hole so when a defrost cycle turns on it will trasnfer heat and keep the hole from freezing up. A #10 or #12 copper wire usually transfers enough heat to keep the hole from freezing up.

Water Dripping Inside

Sounds like a blocked defrost drain. By "American" I presume you mean side-by-side.
I had a similar problem with a freezer-on-top style Samsung. The solution to that was to defrost the freezer, remove the false backing plate in the freezer (required removal of the ice cube tray. the panel just pops out with a bit of pulling). The drain hole beneath the freezer coils was blocked with ice. This drain passes down into the fridge and then out the back of the fridge into the evaporation pan next to the motor. There is a collector pan under the freezer coils, this and the drain hole were filled with ice. When the freezer goes into its self-defrost cycle the water collects here and then overflows into the fridge.
I removed the ice with hot water/vinegar mixture (so it doesn't re-freeze immediately) and simultaneosuly used a bit of chiselling with a screwdriver to clear the drain plug. I did this from inside the fridge working up the drain hole into the freezer. The whole job took about an hour.

the drain hole could have ben clogged with dirt and now with ice as the water did not drain as it went back to freezing mode. un plug the unit, let the ice thaw for a day, open the rear cover of the freezer and clean the bottom part of the evaporator. you can find the hole at the bottom part of the drain pan. i hope i was able to help.

Water freezing on the tray section under the freezer drawer.

sounds like you have a clogged defrost drain tube. removing back panel of freezer will give you acess to drain trough, melt away the ice with a hair dryer, youll find a drain hole under there somwhere, pouring boiling water down the drain will clear it pretty quickly( i use a steam machine purchased from the infomercials works awesome, after you clear it and all water drain down tube wrap a piece of solid copper wirearound the heater( black calrod heater right above the drain trough) and stick it in the whole maybe an inch or so. now everythime the heater comes on to defrost it will prevent the hole from freezing over
