By any chance is the ticking sound coming from the defrost timer, down in the freezer compartment? If the timer isn't advancing, either there won't be any automatic defrosting and the evaporator will turn into an iceberg or (if the timer gets stuck in permanent defrost) the compressor won't come on.

Defrost timers have a knob (sort of) that you can turn with a screwdriver (in one direction only). That allows you to move the timer in and out of defrost mode for troubleshooting. You can also mark the knob with a Sharpie and watch for the mark to move. These timers are supposed to make a revolution in 6 or 8 hours, depending on the model. The defrost part of the cycle usually lasts less than half an hour.

The defrost timer isn't the only part that can fail and prevent defrosting, but it's the only one likely to tick.

Fridge light doesn't work/makes ticking noise

Let the refrigerator cool for awhile without opening the door. 39 minutes should do. Then check to see if the bulb is warm or hot. If it is the door switch is bad and the light is staying on which will make the plastic expand and cracklel or tick. Hope this helps.

I need more info did you let it stand for a day or so ,if so you may have a defrost component failed which would explain the icwe melting from the evaporator and clearing the fins alowing the cold air to circulate once again ,if it is what Im thinking then it will clog up again and stop working

Fridge made a burning smell, and now makes a Tick, Fan runs on...

Sounds like the start relay has become bad/defective and it should be unplugged until we can have a look at it closer to see if possibly something other than the start relay is the reason for causing this failure. Depending on your model number a defective defrost control board or fan could start this cycle of damage to the compressor start relay and compressor if not unplugged until repaired. Please see if you can find the model number and I will be able to tell you more about the cause and assist you in the repair, Thanks, Sea Breeze

Hi! My fridge just keeps making a ticking sound. It usually makes that sound for a bit and then the fridge "turns on". The sound is coming from towards the top of the backside of the unit and I have...

compressor won't start. Check the start device on compressor: Unplug the fridge, remove the cover on back, on the compressor (roundish black metal thing) there is a white box or brown relay with wires attached to it. Remove it and shake. If you see sand falling out of it - replace the start device. Model# is necessary for correct part number

My fridge keeps making a ticking noise, sort of

The evaporator fan, inside the freezer will sometimes come in contact with ice and make this noise.
If the overload on the compressor is tripping it will make a clicking sound.

Kenmore Model # 596.735032.. Fridge is cool, Freezer is not freezing

After pulling the fridge away from the wall and removing the lower right hand panel I noticed that the compressor (big round black ball with copper tubing) was not turning on. I also noticed that there was a ticking or popping sound comming from it every couple of minutes or so. After doing some research online in numerouse forums I decided to try and replace the overheat relay that is attached to the compressor. It only took maybie five minutes at most to change it and the compressor is now working with nice cold air comming into the fridge and freezer. Hope this helps someone else with the same problem.
