There is a software called macopener that let's you read mac formatted drives with a PC.
If that fails, and If the hdd is in device manager, than at least you can use carving tools like photorec to pull your files out, even if the filesystem is corrupt. If you want somebody else to do it for you you can check Data Recovery NYC. Otherwise http://hddguru.com/ is a great source for tools and knowledge on how to do it yoruself.

If the drive is formatted for anything but a MAC, for example Windows, The drive will be seen but not data will show as the mac cannot read most Windows file systems. Try connecting the drive to a windows machine and see if the data can be read.

Hello,
did you use your drive with a PC too?
What you describe is commonly linked to a drive formatted as NTFS (a windows partition format) which is read only on a plain MAC system. There are add ons you can install on your MAC to make NTFS writable. I can direct you to one if you need.
Another possibility is that your drive is formatted as MS-Dos (FAT32) which is read and write enabled for both PC and MAC, but it has the negative aspect of limiting file size to 4GB. So in your case, maybe your movie files are larger then 4GB and your drive is formatted Fat 32.
To verify the format of the drive, go to DIsk utility, select the LaCie drive and read the information that shows at the bottom of the Disk Utility window.

I have a lacie had drive that i've been using on my mac. My mac died and I bought a PC instead. How can I retrieve the data I stored on my Lacie?

The easiest way that I know is to purchase a program called MacDrive from Mediafour.com

This will let your PC (Windows XP, Vista or Windows7) read the mac formatted HD directly

They do have a trial version, so you can make sure it'll work for your HD before you pay for it.

Mac problems

Hi Jay
Check the formatting of the lacie. Macs can read and write Windows formatted drives except those formatted in NTFS, which they can only read.
If you can read the drive, the chances are it's an NTFS formatted drive.
If you need to use it on both systems then you had better reformat it with the FAT format.

Trying to drag all files from itunes into lacie 250 g design by porsche hard drive and it won't let me.

Thank you for asking your question with FixYa Support.

I am not sure what type of computer you have that your LaCie is connected to, but first and foremost, make sure the external hard drive has been properly formatted to work with the operating system your computer has.
For Windows computers: the LaCie should be formatted in either FAT32 or NTFS (recommended- more secure).
How to Format a HD in Windows Vista
For Mac computers: the LaCie should be formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
If your LaCie is already formatted, then the best way to import your entire iTunes library from the internal hard drive of your computer into the LaCie, especially if you are unable to drag and drop the library into you LaCie, is to try a simple copy and pasting of the ENTIRE iTunes folder from its home on your computer to the LaCie hard drive.

You can also use the website I like to reference which provides some good alternatives to effectively migrating your iTunes Library from a PC or Mac to your external hard drive:

Here is that support link:
How to Transfer iTunes Library to another Computer
(also included in this article, are external hard drives)

For sake of space, I want you to review this article, because I not only agree with its content, it is exactly what I would explain to you as well in a more condensed, easy to follow fashion.

I hope I have helped guide you well on your question.

Lacie 300790 that my Mac won't recognize

the Mac may not recognize it if it is formatted with NTFS. I believ most Macs can read FAT32 and other formats but not NTFS. You could hook the drive up to a modern PC, transfer the files there for a while, format the external drive to FAT32 and copy the files back to the drive. The Mac shold read them now,

'not formated'

That's because your Mac was using a file system called HFSX. Windows uses NTFS. They won't be able to talk to each other without some sort of emulation. Check out http://hem.bredband.net/catacombae/hfsx.html for a free/open source app that you can install on your Windows machine that will read the data on the Mac-formatted drive. If you are just trying to get the drive to work and don't care about the data, right click on it from Windows Explorer, select "Format", then make sure you set it to use the NTFS file system.

Hook your drive back to your PC. Right click on it and check 'properties'. In the box that pops up if it says file system NFTS you are out of luck as that is a non mac compatable file system. If it says FAT32 it should be working on your Mac. If it says NFTS you'll need to transfer the files onto the PC reformat the drive using the LaCie software to FAT32 (the only file system that both Mac and PC can use) then transfer the files back to the external drive. Reformatting erases everything on the drive so don't forget to transfer the files first! I can place Tiff files into Adobe products on my PC so I'm not sure what you mean by Mac format tiff???

LaCie firewire 400 cannot be read by computer apple Mac g5

Whenever there is an HFS Volume could not be repaired issue, that means that your hard drive's existing volume has been damaged and may not be retrievable. In most cases like this, you would be advised to perform an Erase and Install to correct the damaged directory on your portable HD. However, as I understand that is not what you want to do, you may want to research Mac Utility software like these titles below:

Disc Warrior 4.1
font.f1 {font: 12.0px Helvetica}
(for Macs from Alsoft)

Tech Tools Pro 5.0 (for Macs from Micromat)

Drive Genius 2 - Mac (for Macs from Prosoft Engineering)

These are three of the better hard drive diagnostics, repair and directory rebuilding software on the market for Mac Users. I have used them a number of times as a professional onsite Certified Mac technician and they have helped me to help the customers I assisted many times over.

These Mac Utility software all have a price point of under $100.00 and when you are able to experience just how well they work, you find it is worth the investment.

an HFS volume error is repairable with the right software and these utilities are your best option aside from outright erasing and installing your Lacie HD.

LaCie d2 Quadra drive... not showing up on PC after working on a MAC

You need to make sure the drive is formatted for the PC. The Mac will read and write to a FAT32 partition, but the PC cannot see a Mac formatted drive as you have seen.

The only problem is that there is a 32Gb limit per partition for FAT32 drives.

It's not ideal but it's the best you can do easily.
