My dell flat panel monitor wont come on

I have had my Dell E197FP for two years without a hitch. Today I turned on my computer and it came on as always. Suddenly, it turned off and came back on. It did it a second time and now I cannot get it to turn on. The light switch is off and would not turn on. I checked the connection at the back of the computer and it's ok. Also checked the outlet and it is also ok.

    I'm facing a similar problem.
Except I don't think the turning off/on came into play here.
It was on, and then suddenly it was off. And no I cannot detect any sounds coming from the monitor, no lights, no power, nothing.
Have checked power cables and tried on different machines no no avail.

Solution: Replace cap. Radio Shack sells a 1000uF, 35Vcap for $2. This will work.

Why did the cap gobad? The cap is too close to a heatsink and over heated.

What does this capdo? This cap sends a signal to an ICwhich keeps the monitor 'on' after the power switch is pushed. When the cap is weak, AC ripple voltage isapplied to the IC and it sends a signal to shut the monitor off.

Opening the Monitor:These monitors are difficult to open.

The two plastic pieces snap together and must be pried apartwith a flat screw driver.

After removing the stand, you need to insert a flat screwdriver at the bottom of the screen where two slots are located. Then work the screwdriver around until the two plastic pieces are separated.

Remove the cover plate and unscrew the push button circuitboard.

Unplug the monitor cords from the driver board and removethe screen.

Unscrew the mounting screws from the power supply board andremove.

You will need to pinch the plastic support in the middle ofthe board to remove.

Cap Replacement:

Cap is located near a copper heat sink and the value will beon the side of the cap. It will be bulged up on the top. You will see burnmarks on the board surrounding the cap. Unsolder the cap.

Install the new cap and solder. Make sure you connect + ofthe cap to + marked on the board.

Be careful not to solder across joints.

Keep leads long so you can bend the cap as far away from theheat sink as possible.

Reassemble monitor and turn on.

This should solve the problem.

I am using a new Dell 3100 USB dock with two (2) Dell E197FP monitors. I can not get the monitors to change resolution and they are grayed out on 640x480. What do I need to do to get them to change?

I imagine you have just "plug-n-play" the monitors? You need to install the monitor drivers in to your computer from the driver listed on the Dell site and compatible with your operating system. This should clear the grayed out for you.

Hello,

The E177fp and E197fp are identical units other than the size of the display panel. Here is a link to a repair guide for the E177fp that has videos showing how to open the unit. It should help you get your open.

Not in the monitor, there is a sound bar that attaches to the bottom of the screen that is optional that added speakers to that model.

My LCD Dell Flat Screen Monitor has a blue

Open it up and look at the capacitors. The round "tin can" looking components. If the tops appear bulged, then replacing them may help. Check out the YouTube video... and web site...

Dell E197FP - Screen turns off and on constantly

Check the video connector to make sure it is clean and tight. Look closely for broken or bent pins by GENTLY rubbing your finger across the pins.

Otherwise, it sounds like the monitor screen is failing or has faulty wiring or components inside.
