You can use MS Paint to scan documents by going to start, all programs, accessories, Paint. Click file and from scanner or camera. Then you can save it as a jpg or any other file type.

Using the scan button on your printer
HP recommends that you first get comfortable with using the "Scan Picture" and "Scan Document" on-screen "buttons" in HP Solution Center as explained in the previous steps. SmarThru and open Scan To to begin scanning.
NOTE: To scan with your machine, you must install the
software.
Loading document
You can use the document glass to load an original document
for copying and scanning.
1 Lift and open the document cover.
2 Place the document face down on the document glass
and align it with the registration guide at the top left
corner of the glass.
3 Close the document cover. Be careful not to move the
document.
NOTES:
• Leaving the document cover open while copying may affect
copy quality and toner consumption.
So, basically, if you have the software installed. Open the Smarthru software, load your original onto the glass, face down, and close the lid.
