Most likely this is a overheating issue. previous suggestions of getting space between the laptop bottom and the surface it rests on will help but investment in a laptop cooler will be even better. Most laptops have cooling issues. You will notice hot areas near the Alt key and upper left corner of touch pad. Also heat directly under that same location. Warmer to hot air will blow on the fan vent left of the esc key.

Another clue to be sure this is heating problem is does it happen right away or after being on a little while? the long it is on the worse problems get.

Sometimes overheating can be casued by operation in a dirty air environment that builds up dust on the exhaust fan or the vents under the computer. all of these areas need to be clear or airflow to get proper cooling. Never use a vaccume cleaner on these areas while its on and best when the battery is removed as well. static electricity builds on vaccume cleaner hoses and could potentially damage your computer. Clean sufaces with a moist not wet soft cloth not cleaning solutions or achohol as they will damage the suraces of the screen or computer keys and coverings.
Many years as an engineer working on electronic components has taught me to follow these simple guildlines to get a long life from your equipment. The more heat and the longer exposed to heat the shorter the life of components.

Hi KM,

White scribbles, huh? No text or error codes at all?

It might be an overheating issue. That's a common problem with that system. Try putting a couple of coasters or something underneath it and make sure the battery pack and fan areas can breathe. Also, when it shuts down on its own, is it sitting on a couch or somewhere that breathability might be an issue?

Windows take a long time to shut down

Uninstall unused programs. Get an up-to-date Antivirus program and scan your computer. Also get Malwarebytes to look for any Trojans. Windows Vista is notorious for taking a long time to boot or shutdown after a few years. Time to move to Windows 7 if you can, it has tighter code. Windows 8.1 is even better, but some hate the interface.

You can use a torrent site like isoHUNT, to download a copy of the Acer OEM vista disc, this is a little illegal, but if you use your own Windows key from your COA sticker, it should register and activate ok.
You may have to download your drivers seperatly from from ACER.
You will need a torrent client like UTorrent, and the download could take a day or so

Windows Shutting down my computer every 1 hour or so....

First try going to the Microsoft Windows update web site and seeing if your system is in need of updates or patches.
You may need a patch as I have recently found with several machines running XP having the same problem, even though I see that you are running Vista. If it is only happening with Microsoft Office programs then you could run a repair on Office. This link will guide you through the process. Worst case scenario is that you would have to uninstall and then reinstall Office. If it is happening with other non Microsoft programs then you could have a hardware or driver problem. If this is the case hopefully you are still under warranty and can contact the manufacturer for assistance.
